X1 Color Settings

I've recently gotten tired with high contrast, sharpness, and saturation. I came across a refreshing photographer a while ago who had a different look. I fell in love with it. I noticed that the 5D MkII has this kind of image OOC with their 1.2 (or is it 1.4?) 50mm lens when I saw my friend's.

Another friend of mine bought the X100 and is creating a similar look in his images (One attached). I recently got the new Portra 160 for my M2 and it's gorgeous with the 1950's collapsible summicron- producing a similar and even better look.

I'm unable to produce this kind of look with X1 files but that's because I'm inexperienced with PP. I'm using aperture. What recommendations does everyone have? And could I make a preset import setting to make the files more like this to start? Thanks!

I'm a lazy bastard and I am sure other members are great at manipulating pictures by hand, but for this hi-key effect I just use the Nik's Color Efx 3.0 plugin for Photoshop. After selecting the image I go to the plugin filter and select under 'portraits' the High Key filter. I think it is the sort of effect you want. You can add some glow here and there, add control points to exclude the effect from, etc.

Example of such a manipulated high-key image out of the Leica X1 as attachment here... exaggerated the effect a little. Is it somewhat like what you to want to achieve?

Yeah the X1 is a sharp little sucker, I love it personally but I know people are saying the x100 gives a creamy look on certain film settings wide open.

The X1 as you probably know has a Elmarit lens that is characterized by it's sharpness and level of saturation. I have a 28 Elmarit for my M8 and it renders in the same fashion.

Some of those photos you see are all most likely processed in terms of color rendering and focus. Unless they are using a tilt shift lens they are blowing out the background focus in post process. You notice a couple images in on the website half the background is in focus and the other half is out of focus, most likely done in photoshop.

If you want that overall softness your right, you need a faster lens then the X1 provides. I've gotten some o.k. bokeh from the X1, mostly images where there's a falloff in light in the background, but nothing spectacular.

Your best bet is to use a different camera or your M4 if you want to go that route. One idea is to trade your X1 in for a M8. I know your are probably attached to your X1 but the M8 will do everything you want it to and more. Sharp, soft, you will be leaving your friends MkII in the dust (just kidding, kinda).

Something to think about. Either way it's a good idea to practice your PP as it will expand your possibilities. If you have any specific questions about post you can let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

A technique I use with the X1 is to incorporate foreground elements in the image to create a counter balance from the usual sharpness.

Cool! Thanks these are great tips!

I am too attached to the X1, yes. However, the images from my M2 are too superior to it to keep me satisfied with the old post production. I'll use your tips here to see if u can't recreate my X1 experience and images!
