Hi Tony, Holger,

Thanks for your concerns. So far, we are okay down here.

The fire is still a couple canyons away from us.

This was the situation this morning.

So far there have only been voluntary evacuations ordered for White Rock where we live. NM Fire Info

All one can do is pack essentials, namely people, pets, pills, pictures, papers, and personal computers, and of course,

in my case Leica gear, and be ready to leave on fairly short notice. Our biggest concern is to get our 3 horses out.

So far, everything seems to be under control, except the fire that is 0% contained.

The wind is blowing this morning in a favorable direction but that will change later in the day.

However, today's wind is only supposed to get up to 25 mph.

Best, K-H.

This appears to be the back burn they supposedly set near Bandelier and State Road 4.

It looks like the folks who did the back burn worked a miracle. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Now we see mostly just smoke...

... and the choppers mopping up hot spots.

Of course, as the winds change later today we probably will get a lot of smoke.

Hopefully, the back burned areas will protect us.

Best, K-H.

Joachim,

Holy smoke is correct. Because of the dominant wind direction of the day, Los Alamos had to be evacuated. Looking in the direction of Los Alamos, the shy looked like this:

This fire grew in less than half a day to about 44,000 acres.

The last big one in town, the Cerro Grande Fire, took about a week to reach 48,000 acres in May 2000.

As a precautionary measure we have evacuated our horses.

Please, note in the opposite direction of Los Alamos the sky looks quite normal.

We are still here, including cat and dog.

A break in the smoke clouds

The smoke is lifting just a bit.

Another huge smokestack develops late in the day, originating near the Valle Grande area.

Today air quality overall was not too bad around my house -

except for the half hour when we were directly in the path of the smoke,

generated by the fires in the Jemez Mountains.

Boy, that's really nasty stuff to breath in.

The following images were taken with a Nikon D300 and the Leitz Telyt 560 mm f/5.6.

As the D300 has a crop factor of 1.5, the resulting FOV is equivalent to that of an 840 mm focal length lens on a FF sensor with f/5.6.

Real sweet. I hope I got that right.

Of course, there is the obligatory news helicopter.

Wild life is obviously affected badly as well.

Dropping water on a hot spot.

The power lines are somewhere between my camera and the more than 5 miles distant helicopter.

This bird has been sitting there for quite awhile.

Dropping water again, and again, and again ... on the same hot spot.

That's today's sun, setting behind the smoke cloud.

Best, K-H.

Paul,

Many thanks for your feedback. I always appreciate it.

Coming back from Albuquerque today, one can see how far the fires stretch to the south.

We even encountered some rain between Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

Unfortunately not near Los Alamos / White Rock.

A little later we could see how far the fires stretch to the north.

Going now towards Los Alamos, we could see two large plumes of smoke.

Tonight one could see fires burning in several spots along the Jemez Mountain ridge.

This particular hotspot was moving from the lower right to the upper left.

The winds already have shifted and are blowing the smoke from this particular spot directly at us.

One can't see the stars tonight. Doors and windows stay closed to keep the smoke out.

We will see what tomorrow brings.

Best, K-H.
