GMB Posted June 26, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 26, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I want to use ND filters for the S2. Any recommendations? I would probably only need them for the 35 and 70, which both have a 82mm thread and am contemplating a screw on filter instead of a Lee set. Also, if the purpose is mainly to blur water or shoot wide open in bright light, would you recommend 3, 6, or 10 stops? Thanks

cgarnerhome Posted June 26, 2011 Share #2 Posted June 26, 2011 I like using the Singh-Ray filters. They give you several options but they tend to be expensive. If I had to choose one, it would be the Vari-ND which gives you a variable 8 stop range. This gives you the most flexibility as you can quickly vary to density to bracket the effect you might want. I also use a Mor-Slo 5 stop which I can stack with the Vari-ND if I need more density. If you do get both you need to get one with threads on the front of the filter so you can stack them. You can read more at Singh-Ray Filters: Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter. I sometimes get a little color shift but normally it is easily corrected in LR or PS. Eastgreenlander Posted June 26, 2011 Share #3 Posted June 26, 2011 I would not use a vari ND filter because of color shift in the darkest settings. Use a fixed ND filter for best resolution and you can buy two or three for the price of a singh ray vari ND filter.
zoomstop Posted June 28, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 28, 2011 Your timing is good. I was at Ace Photo in Ashburn Virginia today and I meet the Leica and Heliopan rep. He indicated that Heliopan is going to launch a 82mm version of there 6 stop variable ND filter within the next 2-3 months. This is going to be very good for my 35 and 70mm glass on my S2, he stated that the price point is going to be ~$400 to $500. I personally cant wait for this product. I have the 72 and a 77mm. Please let us know how the new filter works out. Variable NDs are a cool concept except there have been a lot of reports of inconsistent color results and vignetting especially with wider lenses. I'd love for the variables to work because of the versatility and creative control, so your experiences with the 72 and 77mm versions would be much appreciated. SINGH-RAY has a new MC Thin 82mm MOR-SLO ND ... $330. at B&H That's a lot of money considering that a B+W 82mm 0.6ND MRC glass filter is $106, and in thin mount is $135. Right now I just use a Polarizer to cut the light for the few times I need that. -Marc
