Mike Rawcs Posted June 24, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've just received my new M9-P camera from Robert White today (looks good, battery charged, ready to test process totally painless) and when I tried to insure it with my current home insurer (all risks, new for old, world-wide) I was told that because it was worth over £5000.00 I couldn't do so! Because I have home insurance already I'm probably going to have to insure with a specialised photographic insurer. Can anyone recommend a U.K. company? Many thanks, Mike. Advertisement Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Hi Mike Rawcs, Take a look here Leica M9-P insurance. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Bill Allsopp Posted June 24, 2011 Share #2 Posted June 24, 2011 Towergate do mine, good service. Camera insurance is much more expensive than household insurance though. Alternatively you could talk to Hiscox about moving your insurance to them Excellent Home and contents insurance and I doubt they would have a prob. with the value. jonoslack Posted June 24, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 24, 2011 HI There I use Aaduki - I've never had to claim, so I don't know how it is then, but they're pleasant and helpful - you do have to tell them when you go abroad. Not cheap - but not stupid either. all the best Good luck with the new camera - is it black? I'm still waiting for mine

mby Posted June 24, 2011 Share #6 Posted June 24, 2011 Thanks Jono and yes, it's black. Looks nice! Mike. Dear Mike, On this topic: is it the same color as the M9 or is it the black paint used at the MP (more shiny and brasses more easily but beautifully on mine)? Thanks, Michael
Mike Rawcs Posted June 24, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted June 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Michael, its black paint, like the MP. Mike.

Mike Rawcs Posted June 24, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted June 24, 2011 Thanks Andy, not being able to just add to my home insurance is a nightmare! I'l check them out. Michael, I just had a closer look at the M9-P finish and I'd say that it is not as deep and shiny a finish as the film MP (Andy will know what I mean here) but it is attractive. Reminds me a little of the black chrome finish but that is from memory, not from a direct comparison. The chrome looks great in the photographs that I have seen but it is too conspicuous for my tastes / needs. Mike.
andybarton Posted June 24, 2011 Share #10 Posted June 24, 2011 More Than are very generous with their contents and cheap with their "extras". Worth looking at next time all those emails and junk mail letters arrive
spylaw4 Posted June 24, 2011 Share #11 Posted June 24, 2011 Hiscox. I've never had to claim (thanks goodness) but they did not quibble at the value of the photo gear, as long as one has adequate all-risks value.
Mike Rawcs Posted June 25, 2011 Author Share #12 Posted June 25, 2011 Thanks everyone, I'll start comparing and thanks Andy for More Than: maybe next year.. Mike.
Mike Rawcs Posted June 25, 2011 Author Share #13 Posted June 25, 2011 I've checked out a number of the recommendations here (thank you everyone) but find in the terms and conditions that they do not provide cover for items left unattended. I have, momentarily, done this in the past e.g. left my camera bag on the back seat of the car and gone inside a shop or house and I really want All Risks to be just that. I think that I'l have to phone around on Monday. Thanks again, Mike.
wattsy Posted June 25, 2011 Share #14 Posted June 25, 2011 I'm not sure any insurers will insure against leaving stuff on the seat of your car - just too high risk. Most seem to stipulate it has to go in a locked boot at the very least.
theno23 Posted June 25, 2011 Share #15 Posted June 25, 2011 I got my Leica gear coves on our home insurance, Natwest I think. It's not all risks, it has to be secured, e.g. locked boot. My photo equipment is listed separately, and I had to give specifics on items over £2500, iirc. - Steve

chris_tribble Posted June 26, 2011 Share #17 Posted June 26, 2011 HI ThereI use Aaduki - I've never had to claim, so I don't know how it is then, but they're pleasant and helpful - you do have to tell them when you go abroad. Not cheap - but not stupid either. I also use Aaduki - and had a big claim on them about 18 months ago while in Lisbon. My M8 + 28 cron asph and 75 lux were stolen as I sat and had dinner with friends (the bag was on a bench beside me - but not chained to my wrist!). Aaduki were quick and friendly and paid full replacement value. Obviously I had the hassle of reporting to the police etc, but was I glad I had insurance! Mike Rawcs Posted June 28, 2011 Author Share #18 Posted June 28, 2011 Chris, good to hear that you were insured! Everyone, thanks for your help. I finally went with Towergate: I felt that their terms and conditions were reasonable and didn't put too many restrictions upon me. I took one year cover for equipment between £5000.00 and £7500.00 amateur user, with up to 45 days worldwide for a cost of £213.00. My address showed up "amber" on a flood check and I agreed to a £1000.00 excess in the case of flood. Considering that I have lived at my present address for over 25 years without flood I felt comfortable with that. Hope this helps anyone else looking for insurance. Thanks again everyone who gave advice. Mike.
