Hello K-H.,

nice series!

Quite an achievement with such a lens coupled to an (almost) auto-nothing, archaic reflex camera!

(I am using the Visoflex myself for the fun of exactly these features :p).

Am I right that you are using the "Telyt 560mm f/5.6" head specifically made for the Televit?

If yes (probably), may I ask you for some additional information on your photos?

I like the telescope type Telyts very much myself, and therefore would be interested in the experiences, especially with the M8/9, of other users who photograph with such combinations on a regular basis.

Here are my questions (just curiosity, please feel free to ignore them):

- Do you know what aperture you did use?

- What was the approximate distance (sensor to bird)? And how much did you crop the image?

(Personally, I would crop most telescope-type Telyt images at least to the 'M8 format')

- Did you use an IR-cut filter? (I know that the M9 is much less prone to IR-sensitivity than the M8. However, I would probably still use such a filter on long Telyts even with the M9, whenever possible).

- How do you stabilize your Telyt 560 mm (shoulder stock, monopod, tripod)? Any special techniques?

Thank you very much for sharing!

My experience with telescope-type Telyts (on the Visoflex with mostly the M8) currently is limited mainly to the sliding focus Telyt 400/6,8 and the Televit-Telyt 400/5,6.

I also know the Telyt 560/6,8 and the Noflexar 600/8, but have practiced to a much lesser extent with these, because they can no longer be stabilized with the shoulder stocks alone (to my experience). Never used a tripod outdoors (too heavy, limiting my 'reach'), I am just starting to collect experience with a monopod (Monstat) ...

Best regards,

Telyt2003

Yes. All my Leica/Leitz lenses are M or V, no R so far.

Is there another 560/5.6 made by Leitz entirely?

I don't mean R or Novoflex.

f=5.6 ISO=640 1/4000 s

About 20 yards.

Here is the un-cropped picture just down-sampled.

In the dirt you can see where my focus was.

Tripod, it's pictured here with my Telyt 400/5.6 and almost a foot of rings.

For landscape photography the 400/6.8 and 560/6.8 Telyts are preferable as they have less distortion near the image boundaries.

For birding and such I prefer the 400/5.6 and 560/5.6 Telyts as the Televit permits incredibly precise focusing on a perfectly adjusted Visoflex III.

These V-lens type setups also work not just on my Leica M9, but also on my Nikons, e.g. on the D3 that gets up to 11 fps.

Please see here for an example. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/nature-wildlife/183872-story-robin-blue-jay-bee-8-a.html

H-K.,

thank you very much for the kind reply!

It is especially interesting for me that you use the Telyt 560/5,6 fully open!

And the uncropped image that you kindly provided clearly shows that this lens is usable to the image boundaries (even fully opened and even with the M9),

and that the curvature of field is much less pronounced than I would have expected from my own experience with the Telyt 400 mm heads (both the 5,6 in Televit and the sliding focus 6,8).

When I used my Telyt 400/5,6 with the Televit, I experienced that the curvature of field was just a bit much (even with the M8!), especially at 5,6 and at longer distances. I tended to close the Telyt 400/5,6 at least to 6,8 or 8 to get better image boundaries, and finally switched back to the Telyt 400/6,8.

(My experience with the 560 mm Telyts (only 6,8) is, as said, much less, because I can not handle them 'hand held', with shoulder stock alone).

Apparently, the curvature of field is less obvious in the 560 mm versions as compared to the 400 mm versions of the telescope type Telyts (I remember Erwin Puts saying that the circle of sharpness in these 560 mm lenses is greater than the 6 mm of these 400 mm lenses).

However, I recently adapted my Noflexar 600/8 with Novoflex PIGRIF system C to the Visoflex2/3 (I say "adapted", because I wanted to retain both the infinity focus AND the extendible tube at the camera-end of the PIGRIF-C for macro focus, as you probably already guessed).

I was astonished how even the image field is with the Noflexar 600/8 (albeit with the reduced image size of the M8), as compared to my 400 mm telescope type Telyts.

Your sunny days must be really sunny! (In middle Europe I can normally only dream of using 1/4000 s with ISO640 and f=5,6).

Thank you also very much for the links (impressive!)

Best regards,

Telyt2003
