Leica Leather Lust

I just received my classic leather case for my D-Lux 2, after waiting two months for the special order to arrive. It has met my expectations. The leather is sensuously soft, and very well crafted. The embossed Leica logo completes the effect. I find the shoulder strap a much more comfortable and unobtrusive way to carry the camera than the belt loop that I had used previously.

My wife commented that the case looks just like the cases her father had for his Leicas back in the 1960's, and I think she is right.

My only quibble might be the magnetic latch for the flap, which is a bit fussy to get it to catch properly. That might improve as the case breaks in a bit.

I had previously purchased what Leica referred to as a "high quality alligator" case, which was bundled with a spare battery. That case was an embarrasing piece of crap, and I felt cheated, as nowhere did Leica say that it was really embossed cowhide rather than alligator, as had been claimed.

I'm looking forward to the new case taking on a bit of patina as it gets some wear. This is a jewel suitably fit to carry a camera that is also a piece of contemporary sculptural art.

Great to hear about your leather case as I have been considering buying one to replace the red crumpler case {which was made for Leica} that I am now using.

I had been thinking to trade in my D-Lux 2 for the D-Lux 3, what are your views on this, have you read much into the differences or even heard for anyone along these lines?

Best Regards,

John.

I first bought the D-Lux 2, and liked it enough to buy my daughter a D-Lux 3 a few months later. The larger screen is nice, and it has a few other bells and whistles that are cool. But it is essentially the same camera. The extra megapixels don't seem to make a noticable difference, though I have not done any real side by side comparisons. I would not upgrade as long as the D-Lux 2 is performing well.
