tabletopchicago Posted June 16, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) My Leica lenses are 6bit coded.Lens detection on auto. When I shoot a white piece of paper I see vignetting (both color and density) Especially the faster apertures. Is it true that the 6bit coding should remove vignetting. I'm able to correct the problem in Lightroom. However isn't that double profiling? Or am I misunderstanding the need for both. Thank you
Advertisement Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Hi tabletopchicago, Take a look here Lightroom and M9 double profiling 6bit coding. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Lindolfi Posted June 16, 2011 Share #2 Posted June 16, 2011 Tabletopchicago, you will have to be more specific if you want a precise answer. What lenses? What firmware? Any results to show?
tabletopchicago Posted June 16, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted June 16, 2011 21mm Elmarit 35mm Summicron 50mm Summilux 75mm Summicron 1.162 firmware As expected the 21mm and 35mm are the most severe. But again maybe I miss understand what the 6bit coding is and isn't doing. See the attachments. Thank you for the guidance Welcome, dear visitor! Lindolfi Posted June 16, 2011 Share #4 Posted June 16, 2011 Well, the LightRoom Lens correction module is there for extra corrections and I never use them with the M9 images. The 21 Elmarit image you show on the left side looks great without the LightRoom Lens Correction in terms of discolouration. If you want to reduce vignetting you can do that indeed with LightRoom as you show. The 35 Summicron does show some discolouration on the lower edge, which is strange since ususally with the Lens Detection switched on, if there is anything it is on the left edge. With the LightRoom lens correction you have removed some vignetting, but (ofcourse) the lower edge is still slightly magenta, since LightRoom does not handle that. ho_co Posted June 16, 2011 Share #5 Posted June 16, 2011 ttc, welcome to the forum! The easiest way to see the effect of lens coding is to shoot comparisons as you've done, but one with lens detection turned on and the other with lens detection turned off. As for "double profiling," the question in postprocessing is to make the image look the way you want it to. If that means "double profiling," so be it. As long as it looks the way you want, I doubt anyone will ask whether you're "double profiling." Remember, bodies and lenses differ; so the correction applied by the six-bit coding may be more or less than you would like. I don't know whether that helps, but IMHO it's not a question of "double" something or another, but a question of whether you like more or less correction than the camera applies. Jerry_R Posted June 21, 2011 Share #6 Posted June 21, 2011 It is interesting to know, that LR does something at all, repeating something that was done by camera body itself. But it is VERY STRANGE - as Leica M lenses are NOT PRESENT on the list: Lens profile support | Lightroom 3, Photoshop CS5, Camera Raw 6 Earlier discussion: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/147781-still-no-leica-lens-profiles-lr3.html
jpattison Posted June 21, 2011 Share #7 Posted June 21, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Jerry_R, note the OP says "Manual Correction" so he isn't trying to use LR's auto correction. John
Jerry_R Posted June 21, 2011 Share #8 Posted June 21, 2011 Oh, indeed. LR Corrections On on the picture misled me. As we talk about profiles already - I personally think body should not correct RAWs, just JPGs. RAW profiles should used on a computer instead.
