Epson P-5000 with M8 dng files

I've tried to view the DNGs shot with my M8 through the P5000 in a dealer shop just last week. I shot with a Panasonic SD, view it on my M8 LCD, it displayed fine. Then remove it from my M8 and insert to the EPSON, the P5000 display shown that the image format cannot be displayed. That's my experience, though I read from EPSON's site that P5000 shall 'support' RAW/DNG viewing and I really hope I'll work out in near future.

I recently got a P-5000 and tried loading my M8 files. It could not display them. it could display my Canon raw files but it only allows you to look at the embedded preview. Hopefully Epson will update the capabilities of the 5000 soon. My worry is that I understand that the M8 DNG does not have an embedded preview so there may be nothing to display. It may be unlikely that the P-500 will ever be able to decode raw data. It probabally does not have the processing power.

Cheers

I use a P-3000 (same as P-5000 but smaller hard-drive).

The only way to view images from the M8 is to shoot in DNG+Jpeg and use the Jpegs as reference (browsing and zooming).

This is even worse with the DMR, because it can't shoot DNG+Jpeg, only DNG or Jpeg or Tiff.

isn´t it ridicolous that leica call´s dng an universal file-format?

those storage viewers can display the raw-files of almost any digital-camera on the market, but not the universal dng´s!

The M8 DNG actually has a JPEG thumbnail embedded in it. Though you know, in the world digital photography, Leica is a minority niche, let alone Epson will choose to support its R-D1 competitor.

Epson made a simple business decision not to support all RAW/DNG formats... period.

I have one for my DMRs. You cannot see your DNG file but the Epson stores it safely and downloads it perfectly into your PC/MAc where you can visualize. I usually shot a first shot as a jPeg and this serves as a header for my files. An annoyance but at least the Epson is smaller and lighter than a pc!

This is all fixable via firmware updates ---- hopefully they will be coming ......i have been wating for the firmware V 1.3 for the DMR ....well i forget how long ..but a long long time.... maybe leica can;t play in this game...

beautiful lenses.... beautiful camera...beuatiful hardware...... but no ability to maintain the software... the chain is only as strong as the weakes link...and the software link is WEAK

Last spring when I bought my P2000, I knew that one couldn't view a RAW file from my DMR (it will store them just fine), and that it is a firmware problem, since I can view RAW files from my Canon 5D.

I e-mailed Epson about the possibilty of their support DNG in their next firmware upgrade, and got this canned reply:

Thank you for contacting the Epson Connection.

At this point we have not yet tested your digital camera

with the Epson

P-2000 photo viewer. You will be able to download and

store the RAW files

on the P-2000, but we cannot, at this time guarantee that

you will be able

to use the P-2000 to view the RAW files. If you continue

to check our

website for updates, we will have information available

when the P-2000 has

been tested with this and other new cameras.

Any firmware updates for the P-2000 will be posted on our

website at the

following location:

1) Go to Epson - Exceed Your Vision and click on USA.

2) Click on DRIVERS AND SUPPORT and then select DIGITAL

PHOTOGRAPHY and

then MULTIMEDIA AND PHOTO STORAGE VIEWERS.

3) Select the P-2000 and then WINDOWS under DRIVERS AND

DOWNLOADS

If you require further assistance with this particular

issue, please ensure

all of our previous correspondence is contained in your

reply, so we can

better track the history of this issue.

If you have a different issue, please submit another E-form

via our website

(http://www.epson.com), and we will respond in a timely

manner. Thank you

again for contacting Epson.

BTW, xxl-user, it was Adobe that invented and has promoted the DNG format as "universal", not Leica. Hasselblad also uses the format. IMO, Adobe's idea was a good one, ie. attempting to standardize on a RAW format instead of having every camera manufacturer out there having its own, considering that Adobe has, by far, the most users of its imaging software.

  • 4 weeks later...

Epson P-2000 and Leica M8 DNG files:

I submitted the following problem to Epson Tech support last week:

"I have P-2000 (Model G941A, S/N: GKR0011953) w Firmware 02.51 upgraded in

stages through 02.04. I use 2GB Lexar SD cards in my Leica M8. Before the

firmware upgrade P-2000 told me the full 2GB Lexar card contained no data.

The files are in Adobe's "universal" DNG format used by Leica for "RAW"

capture. Now I appear to be able to transfer the DNG files to P-2000 but I

can not view the images on P-2000. The transfer from the card to P-2000

appears to be intact because when I connect P-2000 to G5 (OSX 10.4.4) after the

transfer, I can open the P-2000 file on my desk top, open the Cards folder,

open the folder with the Leica DNG files, drag and drop them to G5, and

then open and view them with an Adobe program on G5. However, P-2000 will not let me

view the Leica M8 DNG files from the 2GB Lexar SD card. Please Help."

Epson wrote back, indicating they know less about this than I do:

"Thank you for contacting the Epson Connection.

Unfortunately, the Epson image viewers will not store and display Leica

.dng raw files from the Leica M8 and there are no plans of any new firmware

for the P-2000 to store and display Leica .dng raw files."

Bottom Line: P-2000 with firmware 02.51 properly installed will store the M8 DNG files but they can not be viewed with it.

I wrote back that I thought they should be ashamed!

aloha,

John

I have the Epson p4000 and it will not support Leica dng. Neither will the 5000.... It is not in Epson's interest to do this as so few cameras use dng as of now... Furthermore, Epson's maximum memory per card download is 2GB. I have asked them when they will upgrade to 4 or 8 Gb and they have no clue. It still is a marvelous machine and worth it. I would use RAW+JPEG as previously described for the M8 but for the R9DMR, I always take a header first shot in JPEG and then everything else in RAW... HOW ONE SUFFERS FOR LEICA :D :D :D
