algrove Posted June 14, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Finally B&H came through. Haven't used it yet, but manual that Leica includes sure gets the juices flowing. This is my first new Leica lens.
Advertisement Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Hi algrove, Take a look here just got my APO 135mm today!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Lindolfi Posted June 14, 2011 Share #2 Posted June 14, 2011 Congratulations. If you tame this lens in terms of focussing (and that is possible, even at f/3.4) you will discover its exquisite character. Have fun!
Peter H Posted June 14, 2011 Share #3 Posted June 14, 2011 Congratulations indeed. Its a very fine lens and certainly worth getting excited about. Enjoy!
algrove Posted June 15, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted June 15, 2011 Thank you both for your kind words. Any comments on encoding it as a Leica Product Number 11829-Elmarit-M f2.8 135mm?
k-hawinkler Posted June 15, 2011 Share #5 Posted June 15, 2011 Wrong frame lines, I believe. K-H.
algrove Posted June 15, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted June 15, 2011 I asked this question as I leave for Europe next week for 3 glorious months and worry I will forget to switch to manual when using this beauty.\, thereby losing EXIF data.
k-hawinkler Posted June 15, 2011 Share #7 Posted June 15, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, I understand. Join the club. My understanding is the only 135 mm that can be coded successfully is the 2.8 with 90mm frame lines. For all others there is no way unless Leica changes their policy. Very frustrating. I almost always forget too to change the settings manually. Have a fun trip anyway, K-H.
Mark2 Posted June 15, 2011 Share #8 Posted June 15, 2011 I sent an email to Leica a few days ago, they said they cannot code this lens. Also this lens cannot be used indoors because the speed will be too slow to hold it steady in your hands
01af Posted June 15, 2011 Share #9 Posted June 15, 2011 Any comments on encoding it as a Leica Product Number 11829—Elmarit-M 135 mm 1:2.8? Don't bother. Also don't bother switching to manual lens recognition when using the lens. Instead, adjust the EXIF data later using ExifTool. That's particularly easy when the 135 mm is your only uncoded lens. viramati Posted June 15, 2011 Share #10 Posted June 15, 2011 I have it and it is a great lens. Can be a pain to focus on the M9 as leica suggest that it be only used stopped down by 2 stops but in reality can be used wide open with very accurate focusing and use of a magnifier. Strangely I find mine fairly easy to focus at close range wide open and have more difficulty at mid distances.
egrossman Posted June 15, 2011 Share #11 Posted June 15, 2011 I checked briefly this morning when after updating my M9 and noticed that this lens is now included in the lens profiles. Cool!
Double Negative Posted June 15, 2011 Share #12 Posted June 15, 2011 VERY nice! Congrats! I picked up the 4/135 Tele-Elmar-M not that long ago and have been shooting with it like a mad man. Zero issues focusing it on the M8 or M9, other than the missing framelines on the M8 it's a gem! Either with or without my 1.15x mag from Japan Exposures. The images are absolutely lovely - from wide open on down.

Double Negative Posted June 15, 2011 Share #14 Posted June 15, 2011 What do you usually use it for? Anything requiring more reach, spatial compression or thin DoF. It's especially sweet on the M8 since it becomes a 180mm f/4 lens essentially. Though you need to "zen" the framing a bit. Frame loosely and you're good; notice the osprey (bird) shot which was taken on the M8 below... Here are all of my shots with it thus far.
01af Posted June 15, 2011 Share #15 Posted June 15, 2011 Any comments on encoding it as a Leica Product Number 11829—Elmarit-M 135 mm 1:2.8? Now, after the new firmware 1.162 for the M9 is out, the situation has changed. Now you can code your Apo-Telyt-M 135 mm lens. Use the 6-bit lens code 53 (110101). I sent an email to Leica a few days ago, they said they cannot code this lens Send your e-mail to Leica again. You might get a different answer now. Double Negative Posted June 15, 2011 Share #16 Posted June 15, 2011 I never noticed previously, but the new firmware has codes for the f/2.8, f/3.4 and f/4 versions.

Oz_Hillbilly Posted June 16, 2011 Share #18 Posted June 16, 2011 Congrats and let us know how it goes. I just got word that my long awaited 135 APO is in the country and being delivered to my Leica Dealer today. Can't wait! My current longest lens is a 90 2.8 Elmarit which I absolutely love. I'm hoping I have as much success with the 135. HillBilly

menos I M6 Posted June 16, 2011 Share #20 Posted June 16, 2011 Congratulations! It's one of my favorite lenses as well. I don't understand Leica's answer on your mail request at all. Leica advices you, that the lens can't be used indoors and to better stop it down two (t w o ?) stops? I use mine mainly for motor sports, wide open, stopped down , close up or at distance - it's one of Leica's very finest lenses. See my "I have a M9 now" thread, where I show some first shots with the M9 and coincidentely used the 135 APO-Telyt for these. It's a pity, Leica treats this fine lens a bit stepfatherly. I hope, this is not signs of letting such wonderful glass go. What about happy 135 APO-Telyt users send Leica some of their samples, to help them understand, what they have here with the 135mm ? Btw. My M9 came a week ago still with the older firmware and allowed for proper manual selection of the APO-Telyt in the menu. This is preserved in the new firmware as well. Is anything to the "code ability" changed?
