scsambrook Posted June 13, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 13, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm a long-term Leica user going back several decades. Two years ago I bought an M8 when Leica UK were offering a very large rebate on the purchase price. The dealer from whom I bought the camera gave me the impression that the rebates applied to display or demonstrator cameras, but as I was saving a lot of money and still getting the 2-year passport cover that didn't worry me. The camera worked just fine from day one, the only niggle was a slightly stiff frame selector lever and a shutter release that wasn't nearly as smooth as my M2. I put the latter down to the different mechanism of the M8. Over the next twenty months though, the frame selector lever got stiffer and stiffer and I began to think that either my lenses had developed focusing problems or the rangefinder was not right at distances between roughly 2 metres and 5 metres. As it seemed unlikely that six lenses would all go wrong at the same time, the rangefinder seemed the likely culprit. Had I damaged the camera somehow? No worries as the camera was still (just) within the 2-year passport cover. So I emailed Leica Service at Solms listing my woes and they emailed me instructions and a UPS prepaid despatch label. UPS picked up the camera Tuesday afternoon at 3pm. It arrived in Solms at 10.05 on the Friday of the same week (20 May) and the following week I got an email saying Leica Camera would fix the frame selector, fix the release button, adjust and clean the rangefinder, update the firmware and check all operations, at no cost to me. The camera arrived home on Friday last week, exactly three weeks after arriving at the factory. Everything was properly fixed - the release is now smooth as melting butter and the focusing is dead right. And they cleaned the sensor as well. So I have nothing but praise for Leica service - quick, excellent communication throughout and all work correctly carried out. The paper work tells me that had I been paying, the cost would have been EUR 319.10. It also tells me that the customs value of the goods was EUR 830 which I surmise is/was the ex-works cost/insurance value of an M8. Nice to have the first-class service, right at the end of the warranty period.
