Auto ISO + Manual mode

It seems that Auto ISO does not work when I switch into Manual mode on my X1 (ie set aperture and shutter speed manually) - the ISO does not seem to move, and when I press the ISO button, Auto is "greyed out", forcing me to manually select an ISO to get the correct exposure. Is this correct or am I missing something?

Yes, that's what "manual" means.

 

You set the exposure without any assistance or interference by your camera. It wouldn't be manual if the camera went and adjusted the exposure, anyway.

In Auto ISO with manual settings of time and aperture the X1 should change the ISO according to the light situation.

It does not.

Nor does it on the Canon 5DII btw, (unless you use a non-Canon lens with an adaptor ring) but that's no help for you shooting with a X1.

It works on the M9 as well as it can work with it's non-matrix metering with times of 1/125 and longer.

 

My suggestion is to decide what your priority is: the speed or the DOF and set the time or f: on A, while using Auto ISO at the same time, if you expect changing light condition to be of wider latitude than your other variable (time or f: stop).

 

But with 2 free-floating variables and no way to preset their interaction you'll have surprises. You'll always get answers, stating that what you ask for is not necessary untill the feature is available, but that's standard on all fora.

That is a question people can eternally argue about and never agree on an answer. Some claim that auto ISO in manual mode just doesn’t make sense and the camera shouldn’t support this folly while others think it’s a great feature. Apparently camera vendors cannot agree either which is why some offer this option while others do not.
