The only lens that I have tried out in a shop and bought as a direct result was the 50/1.4 asph which I tried wide open in direct comparison to my pre-asph. There was no doubt that the asph produced better corner detail wide open and I have not regretted my decision to buy for an instant. Often I've been surprised at how good older lenses have been when briefly tried. Now I am actually keen to see how a lens 'feels' in use as well as its optical characteristics - and you can't beat trying one for oneself to find out how it is ergonomically.
