abrewer Posted June 4, 2011 Share #1  Posted June 4, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've settled on old-fashioned M technique, with left hand index and thumb on the lens barrel and right hand index on the shutter release  But I can easily see holding it like a steering wheel, with left thumb to manipulate Play, WB, Iso and right index slid up on top to release the shutter

Sausalito Posted June 6, 2011 Share #3  Posted June 6, 2011 I've settled on old-fashioned M technique, with left hand index and thumb on the lens barrel and right hand index on the shutter release But I can easily see holding it like a steering wheel, with left thumb to manipulate Play, WB, Iso and right index slid up on top to release the shutter  But why would you hold the lens when the lens focus is on the back?  I'm moving back and forth between a neck strap and a wrist strap (a very small one that cinches and makes it safe)... when I use the neck strap, I've been holding left thumb and index fingers top and bottom and right thumb and index more or less "in play" depending on what they are "doing"  I'm considering a Thumbs Up attachment as the little gem just feels like it will slip from my grasp in many situations.  tom
HiltonJoy Posted June 6, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted June 6, 2011 I'm also learning my way around this " little gem " Seem to be gravitating towards the left hand, top and bottom with my right hand around the Leica grip and fingers free to "walk" around the buttons. I'm not planing at this stage to use the OVF so filled in the hot shoe with a rubber blanking plate which also helps holding. Does the OVF offer any diopter adjustment ? The grip adds about 1 cm of depth which helps and brings the plate thread to within 1 cm of lens centre. No pre-conceived ideas, just what feels right and works. I originally tried the Leica wrist strap but it was way out of proportion for the X-1. Never been keen on straps of any kind but just bought a Gariz mirrorless leather strap. Feels just right. I can see why the thumbs up would help, but will "settle" in a bit more first.
