wildlightphoto Posted June 8, 2011 Share #21 Posted June 8, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) . there is a difference between a 35mm R8 shutter and a larger Medium Format shutter ... namely mass in motion that has to stop. For example, the Phase One Mamiya DF body is a focal plane shutter camera, and creates vibrations at certain shutter speeds ... which have been well documented by techno-geek users on forums such as GetDpi. Those users are lobbing for elimination of use of the focal plane shutter when using the newer Schneider Leaf Shutter lenses as Phase One develops their new replacement body due soon. This Focal Plane shutter vibration issue has become more and more apparent as the resolution of Medium Format digital sensors has increased. I'm a mechanical engineer, so I know about the larger mass.. I also know that there are designs that can reduce vibration. Has the vibration of the S2 shutter been tested? Is it as big a problem as the Mamiya DF shutter?

mwilliamsphotography Posted June 12, 2011 Share #22 Posted June 12, 2011 I'm a mechanical engineer, so I know about the larger mass.. I also know that there are designs that can reduce vibration. Has the vibration of the S2 shutter been tested? Is it as big a problem as the Mamiya DF shutter? I don't know if the shutter in the S2 has been tested Doug, and I haven't read anything on it good or bad. I don't think there are enough of them out there to detect anything one way or the other yet. However, whether it is the shutter or the mirror, or a combination of both, it doesn't escape the Medium Format need to use a higher shutter speed than you would with a 35mm and similar focal length. A fair amount of S2 users feel 2X the focal length is required ... 120 macro = 1/250th, and despite being pretty good at hand-held shooting, I am beginning to believe that to be true, or even slightly understated. I know for a fact that I could hand-hold my leaf shutter H4D/40 at a lower shutter speed than I can my S2 with similar focal lengths ... and I am pretty sure the S2 mirror is better dampened in addition to being smaller. The only way to be certain about the S2 shutter is to test a focal plane lens against a CS lens on the S2 ... but David F has said the focal plane shutter will still be active, so I don't know if that would work then. A lot of the folks on GetDpi have commented on shutter vibrations with the Phase One DF and previous Mamiya 645 cameras at certain shutter speeds ... 1/15th and/or 1/30th I think, (but don't quote me on that). These are photographers shooting high res backs and enlarging quite a bit, so the criteria is changing as the technology advances. -Marc
wildlightphoto Posted June 13, 2011 Share #23 Posted June 13, 2011 A few mirror up test exposures with the camera on a tripod could help determine if the shutter's vibrations are a problem.
Jamie Roberts Posted June 13, 2011 Share #24 Posted June 13, 2011 {snipped}However, if it is true that the S2 also utilizes the focal plane shutter even with CS leaf shutter lenses, then that advantage may be lost.-Marc Hey Marc, I don't get it... why would the S2 continue to use the focal plane shutter when it's using the CS shutters? You mean "in addition" to using the CS leaf shutter the fp shutter would also fire? Wouldn't that be a little weird, design-wise?
Constable Posted June 13, 2011 Share #25 Posted June 13, 2011 I agree with Marc. The 2x formula is correct. I had a lot of trouble with the 180 at first on the 1x method that I took directky from D3x/s. Funnily enough the battery/grip seems to give some more stability and I can get good results at 1/250 ish Ed
atanabe Posted June 13, 2011 Share #26 Posted June 13, 2011 Hey Marc, I don't get it... why would the S2 continue to use the focal plane shutter when it's using the CS shutters? You mean "in addition" to using the CS leaf shutter the fp shutter would also fire? Wouldn't that be a little weird, design-wise? Jamie, All leaf shutter SLRs use a baffle to keep the film/sensor protected when viewing through the finder. Hasselblad V or H series has a curtain that protects the film gate. The sequence goes, 1) Push shutter button 2) The leaf shutter closes 3) The mirror goes up and the curtain rises 4) Then the leaf shutter cycles the exposure Quite a series of events that take place with a leaf shutter SLR! With a Rollei TLR the viewing lens is separate from the imaging chain and thus, the only action is the leaf shutter opening and closing. So the S2 being an SLR, will still need to protect the imaging chip with the focal plane shutter prior to exposure and will open after the leaf shutter closes and mirror goes up closing at the end of the leaf shutters' cycle. mwilliamsphotography Posted July 16, 2011 Share #28 Posted July 16, 2011 Back to the original question. Lens Rentals had a used S2 w/70 lens for $19,000. No, I don't know age or shutter acutations. IMO, that is a very good price depending on general condition, how old in relation to any warranty left (or if warrantied by the seller for 3 months or so) ... whether the top LCD has been updated (which I believe, but am not sure, is free ... with an understanding that the camera has to go in to Leica), and how many shots on it and the lens, which the seller should be able to provide (rental places can rack up milage quickly). If interested, I'd ask to test drive the kit for a day or so. -Marc
dfarkas Posted July 17, 2011 Share #29 Posted July 17, 2011 ...and how many shots on it and the lens, which the seller should be able to provide (rental places can rack up milage quickly).... Unfortunately, there is no way to determine shutter actuations on an S2 body. Also, if the camera is past the 1-year warranty period, there would be no way to extend it. Just some things to keep in mind. David
glenerrolrd Posted July 19, 2011 Share #30 Posted July 19, 2011 Unfortunately, there is no way to determine shutter actuations on an S2 body. Also, if the camera is past the 1-year warranty period, there would be no way to extend it. Just some things to keep in mind. David This could be important as the S2 ages gracefully ? With an M9 I thought Leica would sell a one year warranty regardless of purchase date. Is that true or are all the original M9 s that were in the first batch 9/9/09 going out of warranty at the end of summer unless you buy in . I looked at that rental kit as thats a heck of a price and they indicated the body was only in use for one week of rental . The issue was that Leica would not warranty a rental body if it was rented even once (this was disclosed by the seller). One year of warranty sells for $1700 so its easy to adjust the selling price to a net and compare used verse new. Leica has an alternative if they offer a CLA with a warranty extension regardless of prior warranty . They used to call that Signature Service and I used it many times as my M series went out of warranty with the M6 s .
mwilliamsphotography Posted July 20, 2011 Share #31 Posted July 20, 2011 Leica had better get in front of this. The warranty on my H4D/60 is extendable for less $$$. I can take it out to 3 years. -Marc
glenerrolrd Posted July 23, 2011 Share #32 Posted July 23, 2011 Has anyone cracked how to determine the number of actuations? Not being able to determine the number of actuations ...is stupid stupid stupid. Like buying a used car without the milage . This will depress the resale market and make the gap to the S3 greater..come on Leica if you want to be like Porsche look at what makes their system work. Used 911 s that you can trust makes them easy to sell and creates the next wave of new car purchases. Getting this right is a real opportunity as even with trade in programs Phase and Hasselblad full cost of ownership is very high. A MF digital camera that holds 50% of its value (body and back) after 4 years would set a high standard and create pride in ownership . Get this right and you will be able to sell more S lenses than you can make .
perb Posted July 24, 2011 Share #33 Posted July 24, 2011 Has anyone cracked how to determine the number of actuations? Well, along the lines of how the M8/M9 works (the m8 metadata project) I had a go at a DNG that I downloaded (see printout in the next post). I like to use ExifTool by Phil Harvey because it works well and is very powerful. While I prefer the command line, there are GUI's if you want. Check the web site which is full of info. Another possibility would be to kindly ask Wolfram Söns to make an S2 version of his utility s/w M8Info/M9Info, see software. This DNG seems to have been touched by Adobe s/w since it contains XMP sections, but amongst other data you can see: ... 0xc65d Raw Data Unique ID : 30303030303030303030313632383932 ... 0xa420 Image Unique ID : 00000000000000000000000000162892 ... If the S2 works like the M8/M9 then the latter "Image Unique ID" should represent the number of shutter actuations in HEX. There are numerous threads on the subject, e.g. http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/35415-determining-shutter-actuations-m8.html, but one easy way is to put this into Google: 0x162892 in decimal ... and the answer is 0x162892 = 1 452 178 OK, so that's a very large number, and it looked much better before the conversion. Since I don't have an S2 I'm afraid you will have to perform your own experiments. You could e.g. extract the numbers from your oldest DNG's, then from a range of consecutive DNG's, and then try to see if those numbers make sense in any way. If the numbers (without hex conversion) increase by one (1) that is a good indication. If they also increase in a decimal fashion, i.e. increase by one (1) over more than 16 DNG's and without the letters {ABCDEF} in them, that would suggest that "Image Unique ID" is indeed a decimal measure of the number of actuations. Now to the former tag "Raw Data Unique ID". I haven't noticed this before so I googled it, and found: "This tag contains a 16-byte unique identifier for the raw image data in the DNG file. DNG readers can use this tag to recognize a particular raw image, even if the file's name or the metadata contained in the file has been changed. If a DNG writer creates such an identifier, it should do so using an algorithm that will ensure that it is very unlikely two different images will end up having the same identifier." Regards Per PS. Note this exif tag: "0x8298 Copyright : Leica Camera AG"

Dougg Posted July 24, 2011 Share #36 Posted July 24, 2011 Interesting effort to tease out some sequential code or number representing shutter actuations. Here are a few bits of info from EXIF in a recent group of shots; five sequential, then a gap to two more later in sequence. The first number in each group is my exposure file number. 110701-04 Date/Time Created: 2011:07:01 12:55:58 Image Unique ID: 00000000000000000000000000222671 110701-05 Date/Time Created: 2011:07:01 12:56:52 Image Unique ID: 00000000000000000000000000322962 110701-06 Date/Time Created: 2011:07:01 12:59:19 Image Unique ID: 00000000000000000000000000362357 110701-07 Date/Time Created: 2011:07:01 13:01:42 Image Unique ID: 00000000000000000000000000445692 110701-08 Date/Time Created: 2011:07:01 13:11:50 Image Unique ID: 00000000000000000000000000056245 110701-39 Date/Time Created: 2011:07:01 14:47:56 Image Unique ID: 00000000000000000000000000745081 110701-40 Date/Time Created: 2011:07:01 14:48:53 Image Unique ID: 00000000000000000000000000828663 The last six digits of the Image Unique ID at least are increasing for each exposure... except for 110701-08, the fifth shot. If there were a missing sixth digit, it would fit better, but I double-checked and that's the whole number, just with another leading zero. Oh, BTW, the EXIF info comes from the Mac shareware program GraphicConverter, reporting the same ExifTool data. Another observation... In the RAW Data Unique ID reported, if you delete the alternating 3's, it comes out with the same number as the Image Unique ID

dfarkas Posted July 25, 2011 Share #38 Posted July 25, 2011 Has anyone cracked how to determine the number of actuations? Not being able to determine the number of actuations ...is stupid stupid stupid. Like buying a used car without the milage . I agree with you Roger. Considering how easy it is to determine actuations on the DMR, M8 and M9, I really don't know why Leica made it impossible to tell on the S2. The unique ID EXIF tag is randomized. My attempts at finding a pattern have been fruitless. Get this right and you will be able to sell more S lenses than you can make . I think Leica has already been in this situation for a while. Demand for S lenses is still higher than Leica can supply, although the situation is starting to improve. David

wattsy Posted July 26, 2011 Share #40 Posted July 26, 2011 With an M9 I thought Leica would sell a one year warranty regardless of purchase date. Is that true or are all the original M9 s that were in the first batch 9/9/09 going out of warranty at the end of summer unless you buy in . This is going OT but I have discussed the €290 M9 warranty extension with Leica and have been told that the offer is an extension only. It will only extend the original warranty period so it is not something that can be bought at any time to get a year's coverage. However, if you pay to have some work done - e.g. have the M9 upgraded to M9P specs - a one-year warranty is provided from the time that the work is done, irrespective of when the original warranty has expired.
