bob24 Posted June 1, 2011 Author Share #21 Â Posted June 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I did the same switch, EP-2 to X1Â No regrets what so ever! Â Bigger sensor and it's at my preferred focal length for street shooting. Â Micro 4/3s is an upgrade from P&Ss for sure but the even larger sensor in the X1 is a major upgrade. Â Good to read thanks. How would you say the screen usability is compared to the Olympus? Â And yes - actually the EP2 was more of downgrade to my SLR actually, but I don't think I would take the SLR back for traveling so I want the best of both :-) Â Boris
Advertisement Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Hi bob24, Take a look here Thinking of trading my Olympus E-P2 for an X1. Is this reasonable?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bob24 Posted June 1, 2011 Author Share #22 Â Posted June 1, 2011 Bob24:Â I took a look at your Flickr pics and I think that you would be well served by the X1. The 35mm equivalent lens fits the perspective of most of your photos. The low noise at high-iso of the X1 will be an improvement for your night shots, and the X1 will travel better with you than the EP-2 (assuming you are using a lens larger than the pancake). Lastly, the X1 has unbelievably great IQ when it focuses correctly (be prepared for a slightly higher than normal percentage of OOF shots that appear from time to time without clear reason). You should also consider the X100, which has all the benefits of the X1 + better viewing (OVF, EVF, and better LCD) + better macro + a lens that does not extend when the camera is on (better for traveling) + movie mode (also good occasionally when traveling or for documentation at trade shows, etc). Both the X1 and X100 have very simple controls, but the X100 has a complex menu system. The X1 is beautiful, but the proportions are a bit off to my eye (looks like a thicker/squatter M camera) compared to the X100 which has classic/beautiful lines (looks like a classic Nikon S3 rangefinder). Just my 2 cents... Â Actually I'm using the Pannasonic pancake most of the time. But I usually have the kit lense somewhere in my luggage and I carry it around if I think I will need a zoom (given how small and light it is, not a problem at all). Â Yes I was also looking at the X100 (as everybody I guess :-)). If the Leica didn't exist I would probably have picked it. But somehow I like like the design of the X1 better (and I assume the lense is better as well). Surely I would love a better screen, but actually I don't mind too much about the viewfinder as even if I agree a viewfinder is great, it just bothers me with my glasses and I almost never use the one from the EP2 (so I'm all in for a smaller design without viewfinder). Then of course I would love the f/2.0 lense as well, but I guess I can't have everything. Â One point really is that I want to try a Leica and see if it works for me. I usually like brand which deliver good products with a long lifecycle that I can resell for a decent price to upgrade (ie products which are not just about the technology). If the X1 was to work for me I would hope to stick with similar Leica products and get the new one every 3 years at reasonable cost, keeps my life simple and I know I always have a good and beautiful camera :-) (you guessed I also buy Apple stuff for my computers/electronics and don't even look at PCs ... just update my Macbook Pro every 2.5-3 years and sell the old one, and will keep doing that unless they obviously deliver a crap one next time I am due to upgrade). kschwarz Posted June 1, 2011 Share #23 Â Posted June 1, 2011 Let me just say clearly, that I know from personal experience that the X1 is a fabulous camera with a best-in-class IQ (I own an X100 too, and the IQ from the X1 is a bit better). You'll be happy either way, and yes I agree with you about the "Leica-thing". For one thing, the products that they make themselves are typically the best-in-class. I know this is true based on my personal M, R and binocular experience. All that said, the X100 has some features that are worth thinking about. Solar B Posted June 2, 2011 Share #24 Â Posted June 2, 2011 If your saying (what we already suspect) that the X1 has the best-in-class IQ then thats all we need to know . Â Binoculars my preference would be Swarovski EL - Terrestrial use. Â and Takahashi Astronomer - Extraterrestrial use. Â Brian
bob24 Posted June 6, 2011 Author Share #25 Â Posted June 6, 2011 OK, after a few days thinking about it, I just ordered a black X1 :-)
georgio Posted June 7, 2011 Share #26 Â Posted June 7, 2011 The X1 is a cool camera and the black one looks very smart. I used to have the X1, but when I got the M9, I did not use it that much anymore and sold it. And as said here in the topic, the JPG's straight out of the cam, are gorgeous. Have fun with your black X1! GEO

phancj Posted June 13, 2011 Share #35 Â Posted June 13, 2011 Depends on what you want, in my case I prefer the retractable lens because when stored the form factor is more dimunitive. My two cents. Â CJ
