HiltonJoy Posted May 24, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted May 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just reading about X-1's file size in another post. Have been reading up about DNG. Think I have a handle on it now, the DNG format includes the embedded JPEG and EXIF data, but not as a "sidecar". Would explain why the files are around 18Mb in DNG+JPEG super fine. No choice of just RAW which makes sense due to DNG embedding the JPEG. You can choose to shoot : DNG+JPEG super fine. DNG+JPEG fine. JPEG super fine. JPEG fine. Resolution selection. (as read) Raw (4272 x 2856 pixels 12.2 megapixel), 3264 x 2160 pixels (7 megapixel), 2144 x 1424 pixels (3 megapixel), 1632 x 1080 pixels (1.8 megapixel). Â Can someone please explain the "3rd" 1.8 megapixel resolution and what it is used for ? Â Based on the above I am tending towards multiple 4Gb or possibly 8Gb cards for storage. Using the camera USB what are typical transfer speeds? Or how long to transfer say 4-6 Gb ? It's not as fast reading the card directly, but I just wondered. As I need to remove the grip to replace the battery, the card is also then accessible. I've only been used to CF cards before and never suffered any data loss by removing them to backup and load data. Hope the SD format is as reliable. Â Cheers

robert blu Posted May 24, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted May 24, 2011 I'm not a digital expert, I mainly use DNG+JPEG fine. I consider the DNG the real file and use JPEG just to see a preview in LR the image. After I have processed the DNG I delete the JPEGs (LR allows anyway to export quickly a JPEG if necessary, let say for web use). I think the 1,8 megapixel alternative is just if someone need a picture to be posted in the net and not to be printed. robert
