Xmas Posted June 16, 2011 Share #21 Posted June 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought a "unused" used MP and having the same issue. I think I've came to the conclusion that it's the pressure plate somehow, but I cleaned it and felt around on the pressure plate and noted nothing.... I ran through a couple rolls of film in the camera with the door closed, opened, bottom plate on, off.... it only happens when the pressure plate is closed and I think I pinpointed the location of where it starts, but when I look at the corresponding point on the pressure plate, there's nothing there... Frustrating. Dont forget the film is upside down left to right inverted in camera... If that does not help remove door and using filtered tap (faucet) water and soft cotton rag wash the face of the pressure plate until you are bored out of mind dry carefully and leave in airing cupboard, over night, cause its a MP keep the water away from the wiring. MSUSpartan Posted June 17, 2011 Share #22 Posted June 17, 2011 Thanks... I took a jeweler's loupe and noticed a TINY TINY burr/scratch on the edge of the pressure plate (side where film comes out). I kind of scraped it a bit with my finger nail and everythings seems ok now. There were misc scratches on my first roll that are all gone now as well (probably from better handling of negatives and cleaning of the pressure plate). Love shooting film, I hope my M9 don't feel neglected now!
Guest camera man Posted June 20, 2011 Share #23 Posted June 20, 2011 Hello I am new to the forum. This is my experience with the scratch problem. I purchased a new MP eleven months ago and within the first two months I had the problem of scratched neg. The scratch ran horizontal, in the form of two lines top and bottom of the frame - in line with the four screws on the back plate. The back plate was scored with the lines and the wind on leaver always felt tight when moving on to the next frame. The camera was sent back to Germany, Leica replaced the plate facing the'cell' side of the neg,for a short while things were fine. The problem is now back. What does MP stand for - Mechanical Perfection? Now the camera is back in Germany with the same problem.Leica may be able to repair the camera but the problem is, can I trust my camera again and can I Trust Leica? On a professional level this is bad news for me

On a professional level this is bad news for me Hi That is bad, one of my M2, a dinked and chipped shooter has clealy visible wear on pressure plate a bit like Winogrands, Leica M4 Garry Winogrand but does not scratch film, (note no screws). Guest sterlinstarlin Posted June 22, 2011 Share #25 Posted June 22, 2011 This happened with one of my Leicas too. It's probably the pressure plate. I always tension my film after I load it just to be safe. Seems to help.
SteveYork Posted June 22, 2011 Share #26 Posted June 22, 2011 I've suggested this before, but run a film through the camera exposing only half the frames - leaving the rest in the cassette. Rewind and process. If the scratches are found on the part of the film that never left the cassette, then it's the processing. If they are only on the exposed part of the film, then it's the camera. Just sacrifice a roll of film. Shoot it. Open it up. Look for scratches.

wattsy Posted July 5, 2011 Share #28 Posted July 5, 2011 hmm, this gives me a second thought on idea to buy new MP, maybe I just stick to old good M3 I don't think film scratching is an endemic problem for the MP so don't let that put you off but some of us have discovered that MP might occasionally stand for Mechanically Piss-poor. That said, I'd still happily buy another one if I had cause (and funds) to do so.
