cgarnerhome Posted May 20, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Recently I was shooting some 2-8 second exposures of the surf at sunset and noticed a strong cyan cast to some of the skies. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this? I had not noticed this before. I also found that it was not that easy to correct in either PS or LR. I was using a ND filter but I can't imagine that it was effecting it that much. Any thoughts? Thanks - Cam Garner Cam Garner Photography

mjh Posted May 21, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 21, 2011 Without having seen those pictures I can only guess it has the same cause as cyan skies usually have, namely clipping in the blue channel. Overexposure, in other words.
cgarnerhome Posted May 21, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted May 21, 2011 Thanks for the thought. I checked all of the channels and none are clipped. It seems to be an anomaly as I haven't seen this before. I'll see if I can post one.
Dougg Posted May 23, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 23, 2011 You could use the Hue control to push the blue around a little more toward violet and away from the greenish end...
cgarnerhome Posted May 23, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted May 23, 2011 Thanks for the suggestion! When I look at the histogram in LR I can see the cyan is shifted pretty far to the right. By going to HSL and shifting the aqua hue to the right and then desaturating the aqua it pulled back the cyan on the histogram. That pretty well took care of it. cgarnerhome Posted May 25, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted May 25, 2011 Well I finally figured out the cause of the color shift. It was the Vari-ND filter. I called Singh-Ray and they did say that when you are using the ND filters at a higher density you can see some color shift. It's actually written in the info that comes with the filter. I guess it pays to read the directions!
c6gowin Posted May 26, 2011 Share #7 Posted May 26, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am glad you figured out the cause of the color shift. I wonder if someone makes ND filters which don't cause color shift.
