epand56 Posted May 18, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I need some advice here for a poor fellow my friend that uses a Nikon D-something to take his pictures. We had a chat about Lightroom and I warmly suggested him to buy this application to PP his pictures. But I remember voices about some problem LR had with Nikon or Canon Raw files (not sure which one). I suppose LR can read Nikon Raw files the same way it read Leica's Dng, but maybe I'm wrong. Any Nikon user here that works on Lightroom 3 and can tell me if anything is smooth or not? Thank you for any help.

tdtaylor Posted May 18, 2011 Share #2 Posted May 18, 2011 Personally have not had any issues with any files from any of my Nikons in Lightroom 3. I jump between Nikon and Leica a fair amount, and while I haven't focused on any differences, I likewise haven't noticed my of any differences between the different files. Have found they are processed a little faster than .DNGs, which we know can take a while.
ho_co Posted May 18, 2011 Share #3 Posted May 18, 2011 Enrico, Nikon claims their files can best be interpreted by their own software. In fact, there is some NEF coding information that they didn't make available to Adobe, and Adobe had to reverse-engineer it. So technically, only Nikon's proprietary software can process Nikon raw files "correctly." Nonetheless, I use Lightroom and Photoshop with my Nikon files without any difficulty. sandymc Posted May 18, 2011 Share #4 Posted May 18, 2011 So far as I am aware, there is only one issue with Nikon raws on LR, which is that LR does not correctly adjust for Nikon's "Active D-Lighting". (It's ok with "normal" D-Lighting). Solution is easy: don't enable Active D-Lighting(!) But even if you do, it's just an exposure offset, so it just means a bit more work correcting in post. Albert Andersen Posted May 25, 2011 Share #6 Posted May 25, 2011 Hi. I have found that a conversion from NEF to JPG gives the best result using the free Nikon software ViewNX2. I have both Nikon and Leica cameras.
