Case for Leica M3 and Front Levers

Hi all,

I plan on getting a M3 (single stroke advance) and have noticed that the M3 has several levers on the front, including one on the right hand-side (for selecting framelines) and one on the left hand-side (for ???).

When purchasing a case (half-case) for the M3, some cases, such as the one from Mr. Zhou, recover partially the left lever so it can not be used. Is that important? What is this left lever used for anyhow?

Other cases, such as the one from A&A (Artisan & Artist) have a larger front opening that enables to get access to this left lever but offers less protection for the camera as a whole.

Thank you for your answers.

Get yourself a second hand Lieca ERC (ever ready case) they come in about a million different variants depending on what lens/light meter combination you use all of the time.

Some of them have three buttons on the back which enables you to remove the front cover so that you have a 'half case'.

These case are amazing value for money as the leather is of superb quality and you can pick us decent ones for about £25. Un-used ones, which you can still get from collectors and dealers etc, will cost you about £150.

Morry:

Thank you very much. That completely answers my question. This left lever is then the self timer, so that means I may not use it too often.

Twotone:

Thank you also for suggesting this alternative to my previous choices. I think I will choose one of these ERC as they protect quite well the whole camera.

Thanks again for your prompt replies.
