smokysun Posted February 2, 2007 Author Share #21 Â Posted February 2, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) ps. i'm not slamming japanese products, by the way. i drive a 23 year old nissan pickup that's still going strong. though i've actually lived in germany for two and a half years, i've made two wonderful trips to japan. and, of course, my canons and fujis get used a lot! carstenw Posted February 3, 2007 Share #22 Â Posted February 3, 2007 Wayne, I am not sure you are going to get a lot out of hyperfocusing with a 50mm lens. The depth of field isn't that great, even at distance. I think people who use that technique tend to use 24-35mm lenses, or even wider. You may have more luck picking a favorite distance, and trying to shoot at that distance only, for street photography. Anyway, I don't have a table, but it is engraved on the lens. Since the circle of confusion was set for film, and digital is more picky, you may want to add an extra stop. Experiment a bit to find out.

woodyspedden Posted February 4, 2007 Share #24  Posted February 4, 2007 Wayne,I will be selling an excellent 35 f/2 and a user 50 f/1.4 with adapters. If you are interested, please pm me. Cindy I just posted a 35-70 Elmarit vario on Ebay so hope some of you folks might want to take a look. I have a second one which I will keep forever since I cannot ever imagine being without this magnificent accomplishment. It may seem expensive at first but when you realize that you are replacing all of the primes in this focal range you begin to realize that it is a bargain.  Check it out  Woody Spedden
smokysun Posted February 9, 2007 Author Share #25  Posted February 9, 2007 hi carsten - and all,  an update. the 50 summicron arrived. beautiful copy. focusing on the 20d isn't easy, but just got the olympus e-1 eyecup and it really helps. have researched screens and am thinking about one.  something else just arrived. the 75-200 f4.5 made by minolta for leica. a few shots around the house. at first blush i thought, 'i'll send it back.' but it was real bargain and feels good (if heavy) on the camera. i'll see what tomorrow brings, though it's raining.  and yes, i love the 50 and wonder if a 28 2.8 would be a good buy on the wider end?  thanks again, wayne  ps. what about focus confirmation adaptors? will they work for these? carstenw Posted February 9, 2007 Share #26  Posted February 9, 2007 There are two 28/2.8 lenses. The older one is not meant to be so good, but the newer copy is probably the best 28mm lens available for SLR cameras, but will set you back at least €1200 or so, used. You can tell the difference in that the new one has a built-in square hood:  Leica Wide Angle 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit R Manual Focus Lens (Rom Contacts)  I am not sure why B&H says it is discontinued. Leica doesn't think so:  Leica Camera AG - Photography - LEICA ELMARIT-R 28 mm f/2.8  If you want to try the focus confirmation adapters, I would recommend reading the fredmiranda forum. Some of the people who make these adapters hang out there, ie. happypagehk and the German guy who sells the chip separately (tmsv?), and lots of people there have tried them. You can search for old threads on Google with something like "site:fredmiranda.com focus confirmation adapter".  Alternative Digital Systems & Lenses - FM Forums  If you want a really good zoom in the 80-200 range, I would recommend the Leica 80-200/4. This is a bit pricy second-hand compared to other second-hand zooms, but apparently it gives beautiful results.  Leica Camera AG - Photography - LEICA VARIO-ELMAR-R 80-200 mm f/
stunsworth Posted February 9, 2007 Share #27 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Carsten, I have a pre-ROM 28mm Elmarit that I bought from Andy Barton of this forum and it's a cracking lens. On the 5D is starts to lose definition towards the corners, but other than that the performance is excellent. I'd imagine on a 20D with the reduced sensor size it would be superb across the frame. carstenw Posted February 9, 2007 Share #28 Â Posted February 9, 2007 Well, that's good news for crop camera owners! I suppose it is all relative. I don't think Leica has ever made a lens which wasn't excellent in its time.
stunsworth Posted February 9, 2007 Share #29 Â Posted February 9, 2007 That's true. It's often easy to forget when we're discussing the qualities of different lenses, good and bad, that we're discussing degrees of excellence :-)
smokysun Posted February 9, 2007 Author Share #30  Posted February 9, 2007 hi carsten,  thanks much. you're a mine of information. i immediately found references to the conformation adaptors and decided to order one of these from hong kong:  eBay: Leica R Lens to Canon Eos AF-Confirm Adapter y122 (item 160083111332 end time Feb-08-07 14:00:12 PST)  i did find a used 80-200 but for this day i'll play with the 75-200. these flower shots on pbase with the latter knocked me over:  Leitz 75-200mm f/4.5 Vario-Elmar-R Lens Sample Photos and Specifications  i'll let you know how it goes.   hi steve,  thanks for the info on the 28. oddly, i really considered the 5d cindy flood sold yesterday, but decided the cropped sensor on the 20d better for my uses and that the money could be spent on lenses, screen, etc.  thanks again to both of you. i'll get back when i've everything together and have done some trials. the 50 summicron pics wonderful, in focus or not!  wayne  ps. the olympus eyecup really does help.  pss. shooting some out the window into a rainy day with the 75-200 f4.5 and the pictures are absolutely gorgeous! not bad for an under $300 lens. this leica lens business is all it's cracked up to be.
