christakis Posted April 29, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 29, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's been around 6 months since I started taking pictures of people. I would like to print out a few of my favourite shots and sit down with someone who knows what they're talking about to go over them, preferably in the Manchester area. Call it an "interim-review" of my work so far. Apart from the Royal Photographic Society (who I'm trying to avoid as not to make a fool of myself), can you recommend of anyone else, perhaps slightly less official, that I could go to ask for opinions/advise? I'm not looking for any ways to sell or make my work "sellable". I simply want to start thinking in creating a half decent "portfolio" or even better, get some advise on organising my work to sets/projects. Although all my pictures have a common theme "street photography" (cliche I know, couldn't avoid it) I find it difficult to split them in groups... In my dreamy little world, someday, I would like to exhibit or even publish my work. That's the goal, I'm hoping "interim-reviews" like what I'm after now, will help me make the goal a reality. Thoughts / Recommendations? Regards, Christakis
Advertisement Posted April 29, 2011 Posted April 29, 2011 Hi christakis, Take a look here Portfolio Review? (Manchester, UK). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted April 29, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 29, 2011 I'd be happy to sit down and critique your photographs, Christakis, and you are welcome to critique mine. I work in the area and would be happy to meet up one weekend morning in town. PM me if this is of interest
Keith (M) Posted April 29, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 29, 2011 Aside from Andy's generous offer, are there not any photographic clubs or society's in your area? As to avoiding the RPS, as a regular participant on their forum for the last 17 months I cannot recall anything other than helpful, constructive advice when I have sought it or asked for C+C on images I have posted there. The Visual Journalism Special Interest Group may well be ideal for your purposes. Why not initially register on the RPS forum and then upload an image or two to the 'People' sub-section for comment? We are a friendly and decidedly unstuffy bunch! PS - lets NOT revisit the 'Am I not worthy...' thread.
christakis Posted April 29, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted April 29, 2011 Thank you both for your reply. Andy, I will take you up on that offer :-) I'll send you a prv message later to arrange the details. Keith, I actually missed the forum in RPS. Didn't notice they had one. What I meant by avoiding the RPS was submitting for a portfolio review.
stunsworth Posted April 29, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 29, 2011 I live about 12 miles west of Manchester, if you arrange something with Andy let me know and I'll come along. A number of people brought photographs to the recent get together in Brighton, and it was a pleasure to see their work.

Sure thing Steve, a fellow photographer on twitter suggested we start a Manchester Street Photographers Collective. That would be nice :-)
