delander † Posted April 28, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 28, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know that several members here have carried out this operation and I have just purchased 4gb from Crucial. It is the correct memory and I am trying to insert it correctly with the slot in the right position. My question is how hard do you have to press to get it to click into place? I'm concerned that I'm going to break something or get it stuck half in half out? Jeff

Look at the contact area to be sure the slots line up - its easy to have the card flipped 180° the wrong way. Apple has a good instruction page here. delander † Posted April 28, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted April 28, 2011 Thanks Roy, I'm trying to do it as in the Apple directions but I'm unable so far to push the memory module until it clicks into position. Jeff
cfritze Posted April 28, 2011 Share #4 Posted April 28, 2011 Like roy said, confirm that you have the RAM oriented right by looking into the slot on the computer and noting what side the gap in the pins is on. Then ease the ram into the slot. When I did this on my machine last week, it took substantial pressure. I gripped the body of the imac with both hands for leversge, used my index fingers to push with steady hard pressure against the ram card. C
delander † Posted April 29, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted April 29, 2011 Thanks I have looked into the slots and to see where the gap in the tabs is. I'll have another go. Jeff
Marquinius Posted April 30, 2011 Share #6 Posted April 30, 2011 Wiggle it a little bit, it should move. I remember having the same anxiety and feeling quite a dork when I just pressed it a little harder and suddenly it went "plop" and everything was OK. You would certainly break an egg with that pressure. To give you an idea.
delander † Posted May 1, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted May 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Actually I'm having to press rather hard, much more than breaking an egg, so for the moment I'm not going ahead. I viewed some videos on youtube where the new cards just click into place. And before anyone else asks I have got the new card correctly orientated. pleeson Posted May 2, 2011 Share #9 Posted May 2, 2011 Take one of the installed chips out and re-insert it into one of the open slots. This way you know the pressure required. If the new one won't go into the slot the old one came from, you know the problem. I've disassembled an iMac; they're pretty sturdy...
