Is V-Lux 1 to D-Lux 3 a down-grade?

I assume that you are referring to the D-Lux 3 and not to the Digilux 3. In any case - going from a V-Lux 1 to a D-Lux 3 would be a downgrade. Going to a Digilux 3 would probably result in an improvement, unless you need the zoom range of the V-Lux 1.

In the end, you will have to decide whether you need a larger camera, like the Digilux 3 or the V-Lux 1 or, if you prefer the pocket size of the D-Lux 3. I have the D-Lux 2, which my wife insisted on getting (..."you have so many Leicas, I want one too"....) and the Panasonic DMC-FZ30 - the previous version of the DMC-FZ50/V-Lux 1. They're entirely different cameras.

P.S. Leica sure needs somebody to help them in naming these cameras............

I have seen the Black D-Lux 3 in stock at both Tamarkin and Berger Bros. They also have the silver D-Lux 3. I have purchased from both these retailers and they have excellent service and ship quickly. I recently purchased a D-Lux 3 and I am very pleased with the results. In my opinion it is the best digital camera for its size. I just bought the V-Lux 1 from Tamarkin and I will have it tomorrow. I am looking forward to giving it a try this weekend. Each camera serves a different purpose based on size and zoom. These are going to be great options to go along with my Canon 5D. The 5D is difficult to pack if I am travelling for business since the two L lenses are pretty bulky. If you are looking for either V-Lux 1 or D-Lux 3 I would look at Berger Bros or Tamarkin (both in NY). If you aer patient and are looking for a bargain eCost has the V-Lux 1 for about $760 but it is on backorder. It could take several weeks to get it but you would save some money.
