Runkel Posted April 24, 2011 Share #21 Posted April 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The problem with the cron is that it can flare unpredictably (i.e., not necessarily in the situations when you might expect to see flare) and unevenly, ruining photos. This is a well-reported issue with the current version, although some examples may be more prone to the problem than others. There are suggestions that the cause is not technically flare, but light exiting the back element of the lens and reflecting off part of the lens housing. . The current summicron I owned did have the problem, meaning that I could never trust it. I sent it to Leica NJ and they repainted inner parts with matte black paint at my request. I believe the problem manifested at least once after that. I later traded the lens toward a summilux ASPH, which has never caused a problem. The version 2/3 summilux is also highly flare resistant.
