frosty Posted April 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello I received my X1 just after the update but ordered pre-update. Loving the camera no complaints here at all as I knew what I was getting. Can any of you tell me to a good book about digital photography that would relate to the X1. Im still getting to grips about white balance, EV+/- etc etc. I feel like Im going back in time back to basics i guess might just be the dials talking to me. This is also my first Leica I picked this camera as it was small and has excellent images so I have read. Nows its time for me to learn how to use the camera and get the best out of it. I love looking at all the old photographs and think how spoilt we are now with all the technology in the cameras these days and people still complain etc etc. I tried to order the handgrip and have been told they won't get ones here is Aust till June july. Is B & H a good place to get them and import them to Aust. Thanks

phancj Posted April 22, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 22, 2011 Welcome! Dont think you'll need a specific book for the X1, it's such a simple camera though experimentation is necessary to get the best results. For me, everything is default except sharpening is set to medium low. Just spend an afternoon taking the same scene with different settings for aperture, shutter speed, iso and you're all set. I hardly fiddle with exp. compensation save exceptional circumstances. I also recommend you err on the side of underexposure for this camera. Have fun! pharyngula Posted April 22, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 22, 2011 It sounds as though you are perhaps looking for something general that handles the ins and outs of exposure, white balance, etc. that is also geared to modern digital cameras. Nothing wrong with wanting to understand more - even with "set it and forget it camera" options. Given that the X1 also allows full manual control, I think a sound knowledge of the fundamentals can be both useful and rewarding. Not knowing your background in photography I don't want to presume too much or too little but I would strongly recommend Bryan Peterson's book on "Understanding Exposure". I think it is a great book and I recommend it to others who desire more than a casual understanding - well written and great examples of the fundamentals.
