Well I am on the search again, and coming up dry. I am living in Chengdu china, and am trying to support my M7, SL2 and MR4-2. I cannot find the batteries in any camera/film/processing shop... Mail is unpredictable here so I hesitate to use mail order. Without going to Beijing, Hong Kong or Shanghi what can I do?

Hi

If a shop will not accept an order to obtain some for you then you need to find some one who is going to a larger city, who can get some and carry them back. Getting the correct battery is never easy.

I normally get batteries made in China, I know that does not help you, but we are into black humour... sorry

Well, thanks all. I am in Chengdu the capital sichuan, and none of the dealers have seen them in years. Cannot find any Tri-X either. I guess I will have to go to Hong Kong, Shanghai, or Beijing.

I guess I will just have to enjoy my M4-2...

Leica M, Weston Master or Sekonic Studio delux.

Those are good battery-less light meters, and good with my M4-2, but with the M7, it is an electronic shutter, with two emergency shutter speeds. So the camera stops working more or less.

I can find batteries for my Sekonic 758 strangely enough. I guess I am addicted to aperture priority on the M7.

Have you tried looking on Taobao? Just get Shunfeng courier or something. The seller doesn't get the money unless they deliver the goods.

If your Chinese isn't that great, just ask a friend to do it. My wife sells loads of stuff on Taobao, never had a problem before.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they are CR1/3N batteries, right? Same type as for the MP.

Good idea, I will pass it by my wife.... As my Chinese is almost non-existant. Yes the M7 is CR1/3N. The SL2 and the MR are PX625. The FAQ that is referred to here and other places is way out of date. Varta makes an alkaline 625U. It's 1.5v but I have had my SL2 and MR checked for accuracy with it and it works correctly... Now to find a supply.

Hi

If it is alkaline its voltage sags with use, Mercury cells, silver cells and hearing air cells don't sag, to the same extent.

Lots of people use hearing aid cells or have the device fitted with a Schottky diode, or use a Schottky based adapter.

If you dont use slide film you wil be ok, you dont need a light meter really...

First choice would be for someone who is going to Hong Kong to pick up for you. Saying that remember that the HK camera shops are probably selling 70%+ of their stuff to Mainland "New Money" Chinese, so they are routinely shipping batteries, SD cards, etc. to every province. I would not worry about using EMS or DHL for shipping batteries. Now, if you wanted them to ship you an M9...well, better not.

It amazes me that there are not any high end camera stores on the mainland. In Shenzhen the only Leica cameras I have seen are X1s for sale in the large shopping malls. You know the places that sell highly marked up cell phones and Apple computers.

I live in Shanghai, so I just walk in the store and buy batteries.

I buy Tri-X from the US, as availability (for reasonable prices) even in Shanghai is spotty.

Bought from BH or Adorama, film still is way cheaper after taxes and duties, than buying local.

Taobao is the best, you can do, I get a lot of things there as well with the help of friends, that is ;-)

I always have a 4x pack of batteries, that fit the M6, MP and M7 in any of my bags.

I never go out of this stuff, just go into another bag ;-)

Good luck in Chengdu and if nothing works, shoot me a pm!
