Angulon or Elmarit 24

Hi guys :)

Yes, this is another one of those dumb "what should I do" threads.

I am trying to decide upon 2 lenses. Before I go any further, I should tell you that I don't photograph people and generally, I don't do landscapes either. Having said that -for lack of anything better to do- I have been shooting a few wider angle shots.

I know that "not all lenses will do all things". I have a 50 cron a 60 macro. I need one last lens to complete what I need for shooting. I'm not crazy about lugging around a bag full of lenses. So, here is my quandary:

1) if I go with the Leitz Super Angulon-R 21mm (f4) it will be great for wide angle imagery but, when I shoot, I also find things that I need at less than 1 meter away. In fact, sometimes, less than a foot. So, if I have the angulon, I don't think that is going to work... "as well".

2) I have heard that the Leitz Elmarit-R 24mm F2.8 is a good lens. But, the difference between these two lenses is only 3 mm. Secondly, this lens is more expensive but it is mint minus plus the leather pouch, et cetera. The angulon is ex+ and 300 dollars less.

Here is an example of what I need. Obviously, this is a wider shot. But, on the side of that grain trailer, I might go and shoot the bolts on the tires... next.

In other words, even closer than this:

What are your thoughts?

SA 21 4.0 received awards when it first came out. It is no longer competitive. F 8 is required for sharp images. F 5.6 is decent. It is the lens I have.

My 24 2.8 was traded for the 21. the 24 has a known problem in that is is very sharp in the focus plane and has normal debth of field effects on axis. Of axis is another story, as items that should be sharp are not. It also had a problem of not clearing the mirror on SL and original Leicaflex cameras. SL2 is ok. I believe the off axis image problem is a result of first use of floating elements and not well executed. It is a Minolta design in a Leica mount.

Neither is perfect, so take your choice. The lens you want is the 21/35 zoom at a lot more money. That or the second version of the 19 mm R.

I wish field of view was more widely used! The 21mm covers 92º; the 24mm covers 84º. Get a protractor and measure those angles. Those 3mm do make a difference!

Dunno about the R version but the 2.8/28 Elmarit ASPH-M is a terrific lens: ultra sharp and clear, useful especially for buildings, inside and out, landscapes and cityscapes.

That sounds like good advice. Maybe I will go with neither of them :)

There's a summicron 90 (the only other length I need) for 600 bucks. That's a pretty good price, methinks.

I'm thinking about getting one of these which can be bought for buttons compared to the 90mm cron:cool:
