Solar B Posted April 15, 2011 Share #1  Posted April 15, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Folks  Visited Fforbes again today in Inverness ... always a pleasure ... went there to see an R9/DMR actually but "finally" succumbed to an X1 .  My question is are there any dealers in the Uk who provide the ggs protectors which i like and also one of those fancy ... M9 titanium like  Lens hoods  Thanks .... Brian
Advertisement Posted April 15, 2011 Posted April 15, 2011 Hi Solar B, Take a look here X1 Screen Protector & Shade/Hood. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Paul Hart Posted April 16, 2011 Share #2  Posted April 16, 2011 Not getting much help, are you!  Anyway, I think David Stephens in Manchester sells proper glass protectors, though I'm not sure which manufacturer. I forgot to pick one up when I got my X1 from him, so got a Giottos SP2870 from eBay, which is fine. They are still available - just search for the serial number.  Stephens Photo Centre  Can't help with those lens hoods.
ezc203 Posted April 16, 2011 Share #3 Â Posted April 16, 2011 A good lens hood alternative for the Leica X1 is the lens hood for the 75mm/90mm Summarit-M. The screw mount for the lens hood fits perfectly with the X1's accessory filter around the retractable lens. It's an interesting coincidence.
Solar B Posted April 16, 2011 Author Share #4  Posted April 16, 2011 I would like to get one of these vented Hoods ... but forgive me ... i do not understand  how they attach to a retractable lens ? do i also need a filter adaptor and if so how  do they themselves attach to the lens ... all new options to me.  Thanks....Brian  For Leica M 49mm 49 tilted metal vented Lens Hood Shade | eBay UK
ezc203 Posted April 16, 2011 Share #5 Â Posted April 16, 2011 Unless you plan on super-glueing a vented hood onto the front of the lens, it probably will not work. The only solid lenshood alternative that I know is the one I recommended. And it works very well. Allnm Posted April 17, 2011 Share #6 Â Posted April 17, 2011 If you want a GGS protector, get one for a Sony A350/A300. They fit. I have one on mine. Â Allan
pharyngula Posted April 17, 2011 Share #7  Posted April 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Brian,  Congratulations on a fine camera choice! The 49mm lens adapter from rainbowimaging works well with the vented hood that you mentioned.  Leica X1 49mm filter, Leica X1 filter adapter tube, Leica X1 X-1 Adapter Tube  You can also find the adapter on eBay and given that it is a Chinese sourced item, I imagine it is available in UK if perhaps through another distributor. The manufacturers logo is KIWI Fotos but definitely a PRC product (KiwiFotos).  Frankly, I was impressed by the quality of the adapter. It is very "clean" looking and precise and the matte black matches the X1 very well. The adapter is internal threaded 49mm at both ends. You screw off the outer Leica accessory ring on the lens housing of the X1 and replace it with the KIWI adapter. It fits perfectly. You then thread 49mm filters and/or the hood onto the adapter. The lens barrel itself just extends and retracts unimpeded within this adapter tube. I do prefer not using the adapter of course, because it defeats the purpose of a compact camera in the first place but I purchased it because I plan to use a polarizer for some landscape/water shots on occasion (others like the added "walk around" protection the adapter/hood confer). The adapter and hood are inexpensive enough to just try out, so I figure you have little to lose.  I can also recommend the Giottos screen protector, I use it on my X1 and have been happy with it - almost a perfect fit.  best,  Doug   I would like to get one of these vented Hoods ... but forgive me ... i do not understand  how they attach to a retractable lens ? do i also need a filter adaptor and if so how  do they themselves attach to the lens ... all new options to me.  Thanks....Brian  For Leica M 49mm 49 tilted metal vented Lens Hood Shade | eBay UK
Solar B Posted April 17, 2011 Author Share #8  Posted April 17, 2011 Thanks Doug  That explains the whole procedure for me .... i will be going for the adaptor you recommended , and will look into getting a Giottos protector.  I think i will have some fun with the X1 this Spring/Summer....the only real problem i have is getting used to its fixed F/L lens, still i have a dl4 & v-lux1 for zoom work .  PS .. i have the SV50 out and there is a fair bit of activity on Sol now .  Cheers.....Brian

I too am planning to have fun with it this summer, I'm going to pack up the X1 with my cheap adapter/hood, a polarizer, an Arca-Swiss style quick release plate, and along with a Gitzo Traveler and tiny ballhead, head off on many island hikes off the coast of Maine!! Fun indeed...  Just look at your fixed lens as a challenge.  Yes, Sol has been putting on a good show lately. Enjoy your X1 Brian!  Doug
