rich8155 Posted July 13, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 13, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) My newly CLA'd Summarit is coming from DAG today and I like it's character so much I decided I need a good hood for it. But my god, the prices for the squarish hood (XOONS) for the Summarit is ridiculous! Gandy has one for the $150 USD and Ritz has two, one for $139 USD and one for $155 USD. Is this hood actually that much better than some other kind of round or other alternative out there? Should I bite the bullet and buy the right hood? Anyone use a good alternative that they find works fine? I know the Summarit is prone to flare and I'll be needing a hood for anything other than overcast conditions. Thanks. The Summarit was my first Leica 50mm lens - bought brand new but cheap (about £50) in early 1961 as a 'discontinued item'(!) It IS prone to flare, especially at full aperture, and I would seriously recommend the use of the correct rectilinear lens hood at all times. I also learnt to remove the UV filter when shooting scenes that included bright, point light sources, to avoid 'ghost' images. Given these precautions, and normal use at f2.8 and upwards, it will produce excellent results. If you can find one in good condition, the rectilinear hood is a lovely piece of work in its own right. doubice Posted July 13, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 13, 2006 Richard, I concur with John's comments above. You should search eBay though, I have never seen the XOONS hood reach those prices there. Generally, they go between US$40.00 to US$80.00, depending on condition and on how many bidders are fighting for it at the same time. Good luck, Jan
ed_oneal Posted July 13, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 13, 2006 I just checked eBay and found three, but they are all in the "store" section at outrageous prices. Two are still in the "red box". These are for collectors and not users. Keep looking on eBay. I got one less than 3 years ago for less than $100 US. Good luck. Ed
rich8155 Posted July 13, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted July 13, 2006 Thanks for advice guys. I just won a XOONS hood on ebay for $86. I really like the character from this lens (lower contrast, some softness wide open) but want to control flare. Too often when I've gone with "cheaper" alternatives that should be "almost as good" in my photography in the past I not only regret it but in the end get the proper item later anyway---thus adding to my cost overall. This time I think I'll do it right. After all I just spent the time and money on a DAG CLA and have now great working Summarit (had no haze in the first place too), why skimp now? Thanks again...
