SteveP Posted January 30, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) What is the correct procedure to connect the M8 to a Mac and transfer pictures? The manual says "Use the program 'Digital Pictures' to transfer" but no program of that name was included in the software CDs. The camera does connect and can be triggered by Leica Digital Capture software (so USB connection is working) but I do not see a download provision in the interface. iPhoto sees the camera, but of course cannot download RAW files. CS2 Bridge does not see the camera as a drive, nor does an icon appear on the desktop. What am I missing? BTW - the M8 declares "USB connected". Guest hagen Posted January 30, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 30, 2007 "Digital Pictures" is part of the Mac software. You will find it under "Programs"

andybarton Posted January 30, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 30, 2007 "Digital Pictures" is part of the Mac software. You will find it under "Programs" No it isn't. Sorry. Just connecting the M8 to a Mac and then switching on the M8 will mount the card as an external drive on the desktop, where it's nice and easy to find. You may need to set a Menu choice as "Disk Mode" or similar on the M8 - I had to on my DMR. Then, just drag and drop the image files to the Folder of your choice. SteveP Posted January 30, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted January 30, 2007 I have a relatively recent Mac Mini Duo, running the latest version of Mac OS-X (Tiger). There is no application called Digital Pictures on this machine. It seems that while the M8 makes an active USB connection to the Mac, it does not mount as a drive so cannot be "browsed". BTW - plugging a USB card reader into the same port works perfectly, so there is some oddity in the way the Mac sees the M8. I also fired up my older G4 PowerBook (also running Tiger) and there is no application called Digital Pictures on it, either. Same effect as well - no desktop icon and no way to download (other than a card reader). AKAIK, there is no menu command in the M8 to activate (or modify) the USB connection. dhoelscher Posted January 30, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 30, 2007 From my experiments with an M8 and a G5 Quad, it appears that the M8 is designed to connect in "USB PTP" mode (point to point, I think). My Canon cameras have a menu preference to use PTP or drive mode, but not the M8. This prevents the Mac OS from mounting the camera as a drive; however, the "Leica digital capture" application on the CD with the camera works buggily with PTP mode (but not for retrieving shots already taken, just the ones that you take using the application). So, for Mac people, take out the SD card and use a card reader to mount the SD card as a drive. Then, you may either use the Finder to drag pics over, or you may use Image Capture, or Lightroom, etc. DH
LeicaFuchs Posted January 30, 2007 Share #10 Posted January 30, 2007 Hi, im MAC OSX (in all versions) there is, a capturing programm, you can even configure it to open automatically, when a camera is connected. You find it in your applications folder. Its icon is a little digicam. In my OSX, german version, its called "Digitale Bilder" ie. digital pic's. That's the programm Leica refers to in the M8 manual. It is as well AUTOMTICALLY installed wit OSX. So, search and find it. Best Regards Werner
Iron Flatline Posted January 30, 2007 Share #11 Posted January 30, 2007 I would strongly suggest using a card reader. There is no reason to tether a $4,000 piece of electronic equipment to another $4,000 piece of electronic equipment - there is a slight chance of a little too much current, or a short circuit, or god knows what to wipe your M8. Get a $79 card reader, and avoid the risk. ...yes, even with a Mac. You should turn off the camera when exchanging lenses. You should DEFINITELY always turn off your camera when removing or replacing either the memory chip, or the battery. You should reformat your chip every time you're done downloading the images. It takes 30 seconds, and ensures better operation.
larry Posted January 30, 2007 Share #12 Posted January 30, 2007 I think there's a disconnect in translation. It's probably the same program as Image Capture in the English-language version. Larry

SteveP Posted January 30, 2007 Author Share #15 Posted January 30, 2007 Thanks all - I do have Image Capture and it does connect. Not quite what I expected from a USB device, but it does the job. Thanks again.

carstenw Posted January 30, 2007 Share #17 Posted January 30, 2007 You can configure it to automatically copy or move all pictures from the camera, without interaction. At the moment, having a card reader, I prefer to copy them myself. I did use Image Capture for a while in automatic copy mode, however. Then I would format the card when it was done and I had verified the receive and made a backup.

4season Posted January 31, 2007 Share #20 Posted January 31, 2007 I suspect we'll see proper Macintosh DNG support when OS X 1.5 "Leopard" is released, probably this summer. Meanwhile, for those of us who sweat out the details on our $40 purchases, I just picked up one of these: SanDisk | Products | Accessories | ImageMate Reader/Writers It was one of only a handful of card readers which officially supports SDHC, among other things. One less thing to worry about in the future, I thought.
