Linear Polarizer for X1?

I'm going to be shooting my X1 this summer at a location where I feel a polarizer might be useful - I'd at least like to have the option of using one. So, I've picked up one of those inexpensive rainbowimaging 49mm adapter barrels and hood and I'm trying to decide on a polarizer.

I am confused, however, about whether a linear will work with the X1 or if I truly need a circular polarizer. I understand that SLRs and other cameras that use beam splitters and phase detection for AF require a circular polarizer. But the X1 uses contrast detection for AF and from what I've been reading about other cameras (e.g., some micro 4/3 that use contrast detection) a linear works.

I've searched forums here and elsewhere about the X1 and polarizers but have not found a clear answer. Some people are using circular polarizers with their X1s but this doesn't necessarily mean a linear won't work. Has anyone tried a linear with the X1 and/or can tell me whether it would likely work? I guess I could just get a circular and be done with it but I'm happy to save the money if it isn't strictly necessary.

thanks,

Doug

See my entry in the FAQ at the customer forum. A circular polariser is needed only by (SLR) cameras with a half-silvered mirror in the metering pathway. No such thing in the X1, so a linerar will work fine. A circular will work just as well, but the extra cost is unnecessary.

Thanks Lars and Michael for responding and confirming what I suspected. Lars, your post in the customer FAQ indeed mentions the X1 specifically - it is the only direct reference to the question that I have been able to find online, present posts excepted.

I will go ahead with a B+W linear. I'll be in Mt. Desert Island in Maine this summer where there is lots of water, sky and hopefully, sun to contend with. I'm planning to leave the dSLR (D700) at home this time and will be carrying my X1, MP and Gitzo Traveler in my backpack pretty much everywhere - along with a polarizer!
