Advertisement Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Hi oskarhhh, Take a look here Digilux 2 focus problem. . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pop Posted April 3, 2011 Share #2 Posted April 3, 2011 The Digilux 2 needs a vertical edge which crosses the small area in the middle of the image which is used for focusing. If there is a horizontal edge you have to turn your camera by 90°.
krabat Posted April 3, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 3, 2011 Thank you for this information. I didn't know it, although I've been using the D2 since March 2004. On the other hand, I use the autofocus only in very rare and exceptional cases.
goatster Posted April 5, 2011 Share #4 Posted April 5, 2011 WOW thats net new info to me -- Vertical edge requirement for autofocus--- how did you find that out? Reason I ask is I had a ton of trouble with autofocus in situations where there the images were full of curves with no straight lines -- thanks, bob
pop Posted April 6, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 6, 2011 That appears to be one of those things one "just knows". I was a bit taken aback when just now I tried to cite an instruction manual for one of my cameras and was unable to find that bit of information. However, I've used autofocus cameras since 1985 and the manufacturer of one of those must have been thoughtful enough to point out the requirements for autofocus to work. You can easily test that behaviour for your camera. Point it at a doorpost or something such that the small rectangle which indicates the AF field is sharply cut into half, preferably into a light and a dark half. Now point the camera such that the same rectangle points to a featureless area such as an overcast sky. Now try different objects with surfaces where the brightness changes gradually. Now try different angles.
ho_co Posted April 7, 2011 Share #6 Posted April 7, 2011 I've never heard that about the Digilux 2, though of course with M Leicas it's natural to rotate the camera to focus on horizontals. Oskar, also make sure you haven't inadvertently switched between Normal and Spot focusing fields (pp 131-132 [37-38 in the pdf] of the manual), since they behave a bit differently. But what you're describing strikes me as very strange, as if part of the focusing sensor has quit working.
