dkCambridgeshire Posted March 31, 2011 Share #1 Posted March 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The finger grip makes a wrist strap easier and more comfortable to use and lessens the strain on the strap lug - and the extra 77grams gives the combination a more solid feel. Next on the list is a JJC lens cap - and then the camera when set to manual focus will be really quick on the draw :-) I'm also considering 'stealth mode' by blacking out the red dot and the Leica lens logo - provided it can be reversible. Best wishes dunk
Advertisement Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Hi dkCambridgeshire, Take a look here Added the X1 Hand Grip. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dkCambridgeshire Posted April 1, 2011 Author Share #2 Posted April 1, 2011 ... and here's the reversible stealth mode ... ... could be a bit neater but will suffice ... 'achieved' with self adhesive camera light sealing felt ... an AAA battery is just the right diameter when used as a template for the black dot. Try this at your own risk - the light trap felt adhesive might set more permanently than it appears to. The finder is a Leica 35mm SBLOO which is cheaper to buy than the 36mm X1 finder. dunk
Adam14 Posted April 1, 2011 Share #3 Posted April 1, 2011 Very interesting! Is that the Leica viewfinder and what do you think of it. Thanks
dkCambridgeshire Posted April 1, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted April 1, 2011 Very interesting! Is that the Leica viewfinder and what do you think of it. Thanks It is a vintage Leica SBLOO 35mm finder and it does the job - but how it compares with the 36mm I'm not sure. Perhaps there's a post somewhere comparing the two; I'd like to know how the eye reliefs compare ie which is best for spectacle wearers. The finder comes into its own now that the manual focus mode provides the more accurate distance scale (compared to Firmware 1.0) and depth of field bands. Back in the 90s when Leica collectors from the Far East frequently travelled to Europe, the SBLOO became rather scarce and prices increased - but even so, now they seem to be less expensive than the 36mm. Le Samourai Posted April 1, 2011 Share #5 Posted April 1, 2011 Why have you covered the red dot?
dkCambridgeshire Posted April 1, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted April 1, 2011 Why have you covered the red dot? The object is to not draw any potential muggers' attention to the fact it is a Leica camera and the red dot has a Leica logo. Black dot inserts are available but they cost $32 including postage ... and they still have the Leica logo. dunk

dkCambridgeshire Posted April 1, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted April 1, 2011 Dunk, how does your stealth mode picture success rate compare with your pre-modified version? I only added the stealth bits last night ... (early this morning) And it is April Fool's day dunk

Le Samourai Posted April 1, 2011 Share #10 Posted April 1, 2011 It's pretty ridiculous if you ask me, not as ridiculous as buying a black dot for $32 I suppose.

jpmac55 Posted April 4, 2011 Share #12 Posted April 4, 2011 Not knocking it but I never understood the need to go stealth or cover the Leica emblem. I don't think I'm fooling anybody when I hold this black box up to my face. I also don't worry about the red dot. I'll keep walking if I'm uncomfortable hanging near potential trouble and usually the red dot is the last of my worries.
JeTexas Posted April 4, 2011 Share #13 Posted April 4, 2011 One of my friends was working in Afghanistan, and she blacked out all her red dots with black marker, but then again, she was worried about getting shot at.
dkCambridgeshire Posted April 23, 2011 Author Share #14 Posted April 23, 2011 I doubt if the average street mugger knows one camera from anotherA cameras a camera to these idiots It was an 'April Fool' joke. dunk
dkCambridgeshire Posted April 24, 2011 Author Share #15 Posted April 24, 2011 Very interesting! Is that the Leica viewfinder and what do you think of it. Thanks I have now tried the dedicated Leica X1 36mm finder and can confirm it is much better than the vintage SBLOO finder especially for spectacles wearers ... because the eye relief is better. But the SBLOO is quite good too ... as is the original rectangular Voigtlander 35mm finder which was current in 2000 ish ... this has been superseded by the circular Voigtlander Mk II version. dunk
Solar B Posted April 24, 2011 Share #16 Posted April 24, 2011 I just missed buying a "Mint/Boxed" SBLOO finder on Ebay 3 days ago ... in the dying seconds it was sitting at £161 but i managed to type in £1700 instead of £170 with about 6 seconds to go so could not submit the bid and lost the auction .
