Why bother? The real thing isn't exactly expensive if you shop wisely. I had a Kiev once but returned it to the shop. It made a plough (that's a backhoe to you, Albert) look sophisticated.

well i am not. this is a leica users forum; and why would one want one of those rather junky copies if you can obtain the real deal? barnacks are not the price of the mps....

come to think of it, i am thinking about obtaining IIIf RD ST because of its rather quiet shutter for more discreet snaps.

Yeah.

What Thomas said.

We're so 'ard here we use real Leicas as doorstops...

Sadly not all of us were in the finacial position to buy a Leica. It was the purchase of a Fed 2 in 1961, that set me off on this whole thing with r/f cameras.

If I had not bought that camera, I would not have later purchased all the Leica stuff that I did.

I doubt very much if the recent renaissance in r/f photography would have happened without the success of other makes as well as Leica. Let's not be snobbish, its not an attractive attribute!:(

John, if money is tight then the Russian rangefinders are cheap way to get into rangefinder photography. But having owned one of the Russian 'Leica' cameras I think people would be better off buying the original Fed or Zorki and spending the money saved on film.

John, the question was "...likes/collects..." The Kiev I had, that I referred to, I had just long enough to take me down the slippery slope to Leica-dom. I also used a Jupiter-9 with my first M6.

It's not about snobbery, it's about recognising quality. I wouldn't criticise anyone who used a Fed or Zorki because it was all they could afford, but I wouldn't personally waste my money collecting such things.

Stick around, you'll find there are very few snobs here.

OK fair do's, I'll reserve my judgement meantime. As a judge in camera club competitions, I don't normally take much interest in the equipment now anyway, just the picture.

I went down the equipment aquisition road one time and in 1990 looked at my camera cupboard, nearly 30 cameras including, M2,M3,M5,111g,111f,11, and eight assorted lenses from 21mm to 280mm+ three Russian cameras and lenses,+ the other assorted Japenese r/f+ lenses and SLRs + lenses. I then looked at the rubbish I was turning out, I was spending more time on what I was shooting with, rather than what I was shooting. Had a nice clear out to the auction house ££££!!!. Now down to three main cameras, 1 leica and two CV + a few held for sentimental reason. I now take a lot more pictures of a higher standard ( not my evaluation, BTW!! )

In any case it with leave my family with less to clean up when I go:rolleyes:

Could not agree more Steve, we had a very embarassing, not to say very sad moment at the Dundee camera club two years ago. We had a very respected judge at the monthly competition, the guy is very honest, probably too much so for some people, but if you enter these things you have to expect this sometimes.

Prints are judged without the authors name being known or the eqipment they use, and a particularly boring picture of a windmill (Photoshopped to hell and beyond) was savaged by the judge, and given a very low marking. ( I thought he was generous!!)

At the end the photos author and his wife went off on a loud tirade of abuse against the judge...

"We have just spent X thousand pounds, on a Canon Eos 1D with three VERY expensive lenses, and you have the barefaced cheek not to give a top mark"

The judge remained utterly calm saying "perhaps you should have spent the money on good tuition, buying him a Stradavarius would not turn him into Itzak Perleman!!

Exactly.!! BTW Bertram pointed me here!!;)

The Voigtlander Bessa R3A handles quite nicely with its 1:1 viewfinder and produces good results. It has all of the features of an M7, although it doesn't feel as heavy, or durable, as the M7 of course... But what do you expect from something that is only 1/7 the price of an M7?

The Bessa R4A, due in April, with viewfinder frames covering the fields for 21, 25, 28, 35 and 50mm lenses might attract some people. Lets hope it also gets Leica to take another look at viewfinder design.

Not sure I would call the VC line "copies", John, any more than the Zeiss Ikon, Rollei or Konica M-mount bodies. They are product lines in their own right, that just happen to be rangefinder cameras using the M-mount. I think what Albert was referring to was the clones, particularly the Russian ones, that occasionally form the basis of rip-off replicas along the lines of "Herman Goering's Platinum and Carbon Fibre IIIg" :D

Did they have carbon fiber in the 1950's?
