ChiILX1 Posted March 31, 2011 Share #21 Posted March 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) You're welcome! #6- I think the zombie stance is obnoxious. To me it screams "I'm un-savvy because I'm a tourist and show no shame about it by striking such an obvious pose so I'm easy to steal from." Just my opinion on that one. Someone told me I need to contextualize this- I live in a big city.

brill64 Posted March 31, 2011 Share #23 Posted March 31, 2011 Why does the Leica M9 not have live view like the X1? simplicity Follow-up question: More importantly- what is the reasoning behind M9 users not complaining about the lack of that feature? simplicity
Steffen.K.Larsen Posted March 31, 2011 Author Share #24 Posted March 31, 2011 I haven't used mine much yet, and now it's in the mail - but I got it for these reasons: Yes, I think it looks "cool" and I feel much more connected to my camera when it's right up against my eye. And true, I feel silly doing the zombie stance. The number one reason I got it is due to battery life though. I haven't tested it myself yet, but I've read several places that you should get about twice as many shots out of your battery. That's not bad when travelling. Furthermore, some day I want to get an M - I want to practise framing with framelines, and I like that you can see outside the lines. Ok, and to mention it twice, it does look way cooler. I'll still use the LCD a lot, I think. 100% accurate framing and such. Time will tell if the above holds true for me - hoping to get my returned viewfinder soon. It's a HUGE plus- as you say, perhaps the biggest reason!!!!! +
tobey bilek Posted April 6, 2011 Share #27 Posted April 6, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The framelines in my 75 were rotated 1 to 3 degrees. All the pics ended up rotated as well. Photo Village replaced it. To check rotation, put a level on the camera and then see if frames track horizontal lines. If it flops around in the shoe, there is no way you will do decent work. If it is tight, but verticals converge, you need to line up vertical lines with opposing sides of the frames or aim the center directly at a part of the subject that is same height as lens + VF. In other words, back must be vertical/parallel to subject. If this is critical to your work, realize RF cameras are for reportage work, not precision photography. For precision, you need a slr with guide lines in the finder or a view camera with grid lines. The lens in the sample pic has distortion and more than likely the VF does also making it nearly impossible to line up. Note the curve to the lines that should be straight. That is distortion. jtori Posted April 7, 2011 Share #28 Posted April 7, 2011 I've got an X1 with Leica OVF and Thumbs Up. A few observations: I find the OVF very helpful in bright daylight. Even with the LCD brightness cranked all the way up, it's difficult to see in bright sunlight. The Leica hot shoe has a raised section, and the OVF a corresponding groove. Because of this and its tight fit, it does not move (laterally or vertically) when it's on the camera. The Thumbs Up has no such ridge and does not offer as tight a fit. Not only is the OVF raised when it's attached to the Thumbs Up, it also moves laterally. As a result, I often make sure it is aligned properly before shooting. I don't own the Voigtlander OVF, however, it strikes me that with its round optics, the lens elements may be prone to become rotated within the housing. This could occur during manufacture (no poka yoke system) or in use. Conversely, the Leica OVF, with its rectangular lens elements, cannot do this. Therefore, it is possible the OP's frame lines may be off slightly. My $0.02, Joe.

wda Posted April 7, 2011 Share #30 Posted April 7, 2011 As a new Leica X1 user, please excuse what may seem like a naive question ... but why do you really need a viewfinder? .... Two reasons: extra stability when shooting and ease of composition when bright ambient lighting obscures precise viewing of the LCD.

I have sold my M8.2 and intended to buy a M9, but with the new X1 firmware available now that makes the X1 a superb small camera, I bought a demo Model X1 (again). I also wear glasses, and my eyes are not 100% anymore after a stroke. John
JeTexas Posted April 7, 2011 Share #32 Posted April 7, 2011 Here's what irks me about the X1 with optical viewfinders and why I've given up on them. You have to use the LCD for manual focus. If the screen is turned on, it's incredibly annoying to put up to my face because the screen is brightly reflecting off my face and up into my eye. However, if I have it set to external viewfinder, it will kick off once I half click the shutter button, but why am I going to focus looking at the screen, but then stop and look through the viewfinder? If I can see the screen well enough to focus, I'm just going to take the shot. If I'm walking around using zone focus, I'm probably not even bringing the camera up to my eye for shots anyway. I don't know. I shoot holding the camera like I would a DSLR except about 6" away from my eye looking at the screen. I've yet to end up in a situation bright enough that I couldn't at least frame the shot with the LCD. I may not be able to tell if it's perfectly in focus, but the OVF doesn't do a thing to help with that either. I'm selling my adjustable 35-72-90-135 if anyone wants it. l4me Posted May 5, 2011 Share #33 Posted May 5, 2011 Does anyone else have problems with their Voigtländer 35mm viewfinder? I had two Voigtländer viewfinders: the 28mm (metal) and the 40mm (plastic). *BOTH* were misaligned. I was able to realign the 40mm, plastic, viewfinder myself. I am in the process of selling my GF1 + Accessories to either move back to a Ricoh GR DIGITAL 3 or a Leica X1. If I go for the Ricoh GR D 3, I'll go for the Zeiss 25/28mm viewfinder. If I go for the Leica X1, I'll go for the Leica X1, 36mm, viewfinder -- although I'll have to have a serious look at this one as I heard its distortion is pretty bad...
