Leitz Canada Conversions??

I may be buying a post-war 111C which has been converted to 111F specification. Could the learned members of this forum advise whether Leitz Canada performed conversions like this and are they identifiable from the German factory conversions. Also, was the numbered flash delay dial supplied on a separate metal plate fixed by screws to the original top plate under the shutter speed dial; or was the rangefinder housing/top plate replaced complete. It is a "black dial" conversion. Thanks, David

Both have been seen.

Both have been seen.

Thank you J.C. Do you know if the two options were done purely at random, or were there specific reasons why one was used instead of the other? You have at least set my mind at rest about the genuineness of this conversion. David :p

During my student years in the late 1960's, I was involved with one of the largest Leica dealers in Canada. There was an extremely limited number of IIIf bodies assembled in Midland - some were engraved Leitz Canada Midland and some were simply engraved in the normal manner - Leitz Wetzlar, even though assembled at the Canadian plant. However, conversions like IIIc to IIIf were never offered by Leitz Canada - all were always shipped to Wetzlar.

From what I recall, early non-synched to synched camera conversions used a separate dial, affixed around the shutter speed dial by screws. Later, I would say from 1955 and on, the whole top plate was replaced during such a conversion. Even on cameras where the top plates were differently sized - i.e. models II, III, IIIa and IIIb.

Best,

Jan

Thank you Jan, the knowledge of experience is invaluable. Every bit of information I can gain about any of my cameras (not solely the Leicas) makes me enjoy it all the more. The store of knowledge in this particular forum though, is amazing. Even more, it's free!! Much appreciated. David
