X1 and iPad 2 = very nice travel combo

Got the iPad two and had a small outing with the x1 as well. The weight, or lack thereof, between the two...plus the camera connection kit really is a handy combo. Certainly it at least reminds me why I first bought the x1, take anywhere.

Anyway, a brief workflow, evaluate on the iPad, dump what needs to go..then transfer. Not bad!

I liked but didn't love the first iPad, the added speed and ram remedied my two big issues. A small day bag means one can have a nice day trip and keep it light.

Anyway, not strictly about the x1, but the two make a very light combo..that's easy to use and relatively liberating. Apologies if the mods think this isn't specific enough, but hey..it's not about the x100 or firmware. :)

I currently use a Macbook Air 11" + X1, but have been thinking about trying an iPad2 + X1. Thanks for posting - your post pushes me toward giving that a try. Now to just find one in the Phx area.

I bought mine at the PV best buy, across the street from the mall. Wasn't a super long line. I also found my original there when they were all sold out and a second one. Also FLW best buy gets a lot of stock.

I think the best buys are a better option than Scottsdale Quarter. I actually live five minutes from sq, but knew it would be crowded so went the other way. SQ has a ton of case choices in stock regularly, should you be unable to find your case preference at a best buy.

Iirc some best buy are doing in store reservations. Fwiw I tried the air, it just didn't suit me. For the size and weight I wanted more from lightroom, and while the iPad clearly doesn't do any heavy editing, I do think it works well considering the weight. I'll hang onto my aging 15" and upgrade to ssd for longer trips, but I'd feel perfectly comfortable taking the iPad for a long weekend now (not so with the first version)

Good luck with your search!

I use the same combo, but I have my mba bumped up to max specs. Works like a charm I have LR and PS Elements in it.

For you folks with both an iPad and a MacBook Air - Do you find you need to carry both?

The MBA does just about everything the iPad does, plus much more. The iPad is smaller/lighter. Wouldn't you carry just one?

Scenario 1 - Day outing. Take iPad for quick review, minor adjustments and emailing/uploading photographs. Can still check emails, news, sports and have games, music, movies if needed.

Scenario 2 - Week-end or longer outing. MBA for more serious review, editing and adjusting. Plus does all a laptop does that may be required when away from home/office.

I'm about to replace an old laptop and an trying to decide MBA vs. MBP. Lots of advantages with the MBA but seems close to the iPad I already have. What scenario would prompt a person to carry both a laptop and an iPad? Thanks.

Just my humble idea but if you travel with a laptop do not need the i-pad. It is just duplicating weight and things with you (what to leave in the hotel ? or in the car?) Or take both with you?

I'm getting old and try to travel light, so much as possible. Unless you travel with your wife or girl friend and when you working on pictures she likes to read news, listen to music, reading mails etc...

Well, I do need to carry both most of the time as the wife runs an online store so she needs access to the net constantly and I need my computer for business emails, etc.

If there are problems with the iPad (can't load java or flash), we just switch. :) And the iPad and MBA are very light. Both together are lighter then my old brick of a laptop.

I'd agree with that. And for a long trip, a small laptop is p,rob ably more handy. For a short trip, the iPad is a better choice IMO.

Dream combo. The 2010 11" MBA fully amped is a wonder. Rest of my Mac gear getting lonely save for serious photo editing.

Seems silly to me now to carry anything that weighs more/, just like the X1 if I want to carry around a fized 35mm FOV.

Only challenge with the little Air giant is no car reader on the 2010, so you have to carry a card reader around, just like you have to carry something extra around with ipads.

Michael:

What limits the MBA for serious photo editing? Screen size, computing power or something else? Thanks.

To stay on topic I agree that the combination of the X1 and iPad (version 1 in my case) is terrific. Yes, I'm aware of the "the X1 doesn't do this" and "the iPad doesn't do that" complaints, but holey smokes - the incredible image quality out of the X1 and the editing and emailing/uploading/moving of images via the iPad, all fitting into a brief case or small pack really is remarkable.

On the road the MBA is limited by battery life. It drains much faster than either iPad. I think the X1 with iPad in the field is a pretty sweet combo per your email above. Agreed on the iPad. I have not experienced processing power problems on the MBA fully loaded. I did ditch many of the programs that were on there to take advantage of the full SSD HD boost.

If I were to leave the house today on a vacation where I planned on taking a lot of serious photography, but not professional and would do heavy lifting back that the ranch, I would bring my X1 and 64gb iPad in a nice rucksack and that's it. It's like having a storage photo reader + a lot more to day the least.

We've actually given a couple iPads loaded with photos and videos to our business development guys and trained them to let the clients hold them and flip through them at their own pace. It's so much more engaging than setting up a notebook and clicking through a power point. Right now we're using a pilot program of Good Messaging as a Lotus Notes client, so they can get their email on the iPads as well. It seems to work well as an alternative to carrying a laptop but hasn't totally replaced them because we still work in a world full of Microsoft Office.

One gripe about the iPad is that I do wish that there was a built-in SD card slot because the little USB/camera adapter doohickeys don't seem to work that well. I had to return the first set I bought because unless I held them into the cable slot under pressure at an angle, the iPad didn't register that it was plugged in.

This is a bit off topic, but I was playing with my friend's new iPad 2 last night and flipping through The Daily. Has anyone decided to pay for a subscription to that? I hope it catches on because news outlets might finally be able to pay good photographers and writers again.

There are a few issues with the daily tht prevent me from paying just now.

A) the content we see may 'shift angles' once the free period is over. It's not too like its other media siblings, and may become less objective.

B) the bigger issue, no access to previous issues, no way to go back and reference, etc.

C) it's getting better, and much nicer on the iPad 2 than 1 but there are still some bugs to squash

D) paid content and adverts..may work in print, doesn't with digital really..especially full page animated featurettes make it ad supported, or subscriber supported, or both..but not at the same time., split the content publish.

Can raws be moved and viewed on the ipad/ipad2?

Yes, and no. The iPad does not display the raw file itself but a jpeg created from the raw file. So you can shoot raw only and the iPad will display the image as a jpeg (at least for the cameras I have - Nikon and Leica). With the X1 it's not an issue since you can only choose between shooting jpeg only or raw + jpeg. In either case the iPad has a jpeg to work with.

Yes you can use the iPad to store and move raw images. Dump raws from the card onto the iPad and then load up the raws to your main computer. Easy and neat.

its a bit offtopic but my ipad2 shows a terrible backlight bleeding when watching dark scenes or websites :( i hate it to be early adaptor, if i send it back i have to wait 6 Weeks or so. My plan was to send it in before the warranty dates out in a year, because i have fear the new owner will bring it back to me after i sold it. Generally the ipad2 is not worth it if u switch from ipad1 i must say. For 700 Euro thescreen should be perfect :(
