I have always wanted an AF leica, the S2 is currently the one, apart from its size/weight and gasp! price. I am still waiting for the rumored R solution, there were some rumors it will have AF. That may be the one camera I will buy and use for as long as it lasts...provided it's not vaporware.

Meanwhile my X1 does its job admirably...

I don't know what rumors there about the R, but I do know that Leica was traumatized by the failure of that camera, which left them with $50 million of unsold stock on the shelves. It accounts for their current timidity in planning, and their build-on-demand policy. If I decide to get an S2 -- and I will post my conclusions in a week when I have thoroughly field-tested it -- I do know that they can give me absolutely no assurances when I can get my hands on the 35 mm lens I need. Crazy.

I LUV the X1 as it is too. Why do kooks appear here to criticize their own cameras? It is psychologically strange behavior.

Then different naysayers appear here to suggest that the new Fuji camera will eat the lunch of the X1.

Why discuss that here?

The X1 that I've had for a year is fantastic in every way. I'm also using my M4P and it is still great too.

I suspect most of the naysayers don't own a x1 or even own a leica, and they want the Fuji to be better than the x1 so they can feel superior to the x1 owners.

I am not bothered by the 'slow focus' some complain of, of course I have never held a DSLR so maybe I am not a competent correspondent on that issue.

I hope an AF R-solution appears.

Yup, the supply of leica to put it mildly extremely erratic.

I was going to buy the M9 with a 35mm lux (the new one) and first there was no stock of M9, then no stock of lens, they suggested I buy the M9 sans lens first and wait patiently (while the warranty passes by..) ???

The wait time I must say did remove much of my earlier impulse of buying it. So now I can be patient coz I am not excited by it no more, though I am pretty sure I'll end up with another leica. I like their image processing and lens better.

One thing I always remember is the interview with the X1 designer where he mentioned how risky and ridiculous it was that Leica as the small company that they are, was even taking on the design and production of a compact camera like the X1.

A lot of people's frustrations like erratic supply, slow firmware releases, only periodic product updates, higher costs compared to other megaproducers etc., seem to be natural subsequences to the kind of company and production process that attracts the same buyers in the first place- namely manufacturing processes that harken back to artisanal / feudal modes of production.

Otherwise said, you can't have your cake and eat it too. The kind of infrastructure and company that would seem to be required to meet the collective / aggregate demands and expectations of a "quantity first, quality second" trained consumer public would necessarily transform Leica in ways that would, at best, have Leica traditionalists cry foul and at worst, eliminate the nostalgic / aura-like appeal the brand cultivates. Again rephrased, if we had all these things we wanted out of Leica we may not be buying their products anymore.

Then again there are those old-time Leica users who say today's Leica fails in comparison with its former self in exactly those ways to the point where they think that the M9 is poorly made.

My M9 has failed three times -- card reader failure, shutter failure, and the brightline preview lever fell off. Having said that, I love the camera. It allows for a freedom to shoot that film doesn't have because of the huge constraint of having to develop film. And the viewfinder is like one that I have been looking through for the past 40 years. On screen the files look wonderful. This week I will be setting up an Epson 4900 to see what it can really do -- that is the only test. And I will be putting it up against my S2 and X-1 files as well.
