mjh Posted March 11, 2011 Share #41  Posted March 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The base iso for X1 is 100, that of X100 is 200. What exactly is the difference ( whether the X1's is "boosted") and if any what are the implications in performance? Actually the X100 offers ISO 100 as well, but only within its extended ISO range, indicating pull processing. A sensor’s base sensitivity would only incidentally match some discrete value on a 1 EV ISO scale exactly and in this case the sensitivity will fall between ISO 100 and 200, with Leica rounding down and Fuji rounding up. Advertisement Posted March 11, 2011 Posted March 11, 2011 Hi mjh, Take a look here firmware maybe on april!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
prk60091 Posted March 11, 2011 Share #42  Posted March 11, 2011 I don’t own an X1 so in that respect it doesn’t concern me. It is more of a general concern that firmware developers shouldn’t heed users clamouring for an early release but rather take all the time they need. Especially when there are no serious bugs to squash and the objective of the update is just to improve performance – we don’t want any new bugs to be introduced, do we?  i blame microsoft for the philosophy that there must be frequent incremental updates....their philosophy has always been ship quick and we will fix the bugs later.....i prefer getting it absolutely right on the 1st time rather than frequent bug fixes..... barjohn Posted March 11, 2011 Share #43 Â Posted March 11, 2011 While I don't subscribe to Microsoft's philosophy, the notion that you can ever test out all the bugs on a complex piece of software will lead you to never releasing it. I have been a programmer and managed many programming teams and projects and no programmer ever thinks it is ready to go. Until you get it in the hands of users and you see the things they do that never occurred to you, you won't find all of the bugs.
bill Posted March 11, 2011 Share #44 Â Posted March 11, 2011 Nonsense. Â You may have been a programmer but you have clearly never worked on, for instance, defence systems. Â One of my oldest friends works for a defence company as a software engineer and latterly a project manager. Years ago he and I compared notes. We spoke in particular about the time it takes to take software through design, build and test stages. I was talking, from a commercial point of view, in terms of weeks and months. He was talking in terms of years. When I scoffed he observed that, for example, the system he was working on at the time - a warship-positioning and missile defence system to protect capital ships - had to work, full stop. After all, "While your ship is sinking you won't have time to be logging a priority one service request, will you?" Â Regards, Â Bill
Allnm Posted March 11, 2011 Share #45 Â Posted March 11, 2011 I dont think Warship defence systems can be likened to software like Windows. Defense software is going to be pretty much used as designed on specific systems and Warships usually carry highly trained people with a degee of common sense. The general public software users generally contain a large amount of numptys that have to look in the manual to learn how to turn it on....every day, and attached cheap 3rd party poorly made peripherals that crash the systems. Â But defence systems aren't infallible. Quite a few UK armoured reconnaissance vehicles were taken out of service a good few years ago while they figured out why turning on the left indicator fired the gun! I bet that wasnt the only time something went wrong either... Â Allan
markgay Posted March 11, 2011 Share #46 Â Posted March 11, 2011 And the X100 appears to be considerably larger than the X1 so it is not a competitor in any way, shape or form. Â 1) it's not a small, go anywhere camera - it's an M3-sized go anywhere camera. Â 2) objectively it's a much bigger box, full of much more electronicks and thus has no more in common with the X1 than a DSLR monster has with an M8/9. h00ligan Posted March 11, 2011 Share #48 Â Posted March 11, 2011 Camera firmware would certainly be closer to consumer software releases rather than missile systems. Â I agree there are always bugs, even in the defense system they uncovered bugs even after years of release postponement. If they didn't it was due to limited user base, not lack of bugs. Â Bugs exist in all software/firmware.. they can be equated to security.. it's never perfect, just good enough for now.
barjohn Posted March 11, 2011 Share #49  Posted March 11, 2011 Bill,  You had me rolling on the floor laughing with that one. Why? Because I work for the department of defense! My team just recently deployed a major enterprise system we developed from concept to SEATRIAL in 12 months. NAVSEA just awarded my team as engineers of the year! Oh! And in the last year we installed it and trained the crews in use on every surface ship in the US Navy. This year we will do the submarine fleet. But you are right I don't know anything about SLOW DEVELOPMENT. We work rapid development because we have people dying when we dilly-dally around.   Nonsense. You may have been a programmer but you have clearly never worked on, for instance, defence systems.  One of my oldest friends works for a defence company as a software engineer and latterly a project manager. h00ligan Posted March 11, 2011 Share #50 Â Posted March 11, 2011 That actually made me LOL. Â To the firmware update.. I really just don't care anymore. I don't think it will be as good as I had hoped, the camera will just be relegated for walk around scenics, not parties and the like. Â I'm about to order a 5d2 and 35L - that will be a party cam (but a big one)
