Leica Customer Service Problem

As far as I can tell, Leica Camera are still offering the DX reader fix to you for free.

When they receive a camera for any repair or servicing, in every case they check all functions.

Then you get the estimate for your approval before the camera is disassembled for any work. It doesn't make sense to just repair one thing if they find other problems while the camera is there. They are trying to return your camera to you working properly in every respect and the whole camera guaranteed for a new 12 months.

If you are not willing to pay for the extra work or do not agree that it is needed, they cannot guarantee the whole camera of course.

Everyone else here can just offer their opinion or experience. But it is your decision and your money.

You certainly could contact customer service and ask whether they will do the free DX reader upgrade only. Then only the DX reader work would be guaranteed. I would not recommend that. If extra work is needed then it would be cheaper to have it done now while the camera is already there.

I think that your only two options are to pay for the needed work now instead of paying more later.

Or decline the needed work and ask that the camera be returned to you.

It would be disappointing to buy a second hand camera and now find they you need to spend a lot more to have it serviced. All mechanical cameras benefit from routine servicing of course. If you do get that unexpected work done, you should be able to look forward to years of service from this fine camera and have the confidence that the whole camera is guaranteed too.

Good luck to you getting it all resolved and getting out to make great pictures with it.

Thanks for your kind comments. I now decided to do these repairing.

I believe the repairing have its value. A perfect working camera is much more than anything.

Just a couple of questions as I have never had the need to deal with Solms, Germany.

When you send your camera, do you send in it's original box and packaging for maximum security and do you get this back - I read a while back somewhere of someone getting their camera back in a velvet pouch - but I don't want to lose the original packaging?

Do you just contact Leica customer services and they arrange it, courier wise?

And of course the big question how long do they turn it all around?

I'm based in the UK.

Thanks

Oh...well. I also sent the original box that fits with my camera inside to Germany. I agreed with you. I want to my camera back with the my box as well and not like you said a velvet pouch. Since your mention, I think I should contact with Service in advance. Thanks.

It will take maximum three weeks but you can select the fast or express service which will spend 2days or 5days respectively.

I just got back my M6 TTL from Solms (upgrade to MP finder & service) and paid for 5 day fast service. It was away for 3 weeks - the five working days begin after they have assessed the job and this can be over a week from their receipt of the camera. Having said that they did a great job :) and I've sent in my M9 for sensor cleaning also on 5 day fast.

Mine was also at Leica for some lightleaks, replaced the seals in the back, some rangefinder & shutter adjustement and a new DX reader (which is not doing a great job, I still get blinking 2500 in the finder every now and then, which could not be reproduced by Leica)

As I bough my camera 2nd hand too a cpl of years back I think having it checked and warranted by Leica is worth it, especially if you have problems with shutter accuracy.

Some of the "famous" independent Leica repairguys in Europe don't do M7 bcs of the electronic controlled shutter.
