M8 loose top plate

I just purchased a used M8. Owned a M4.2 years ago and do wish I had kept those lenses.

There is a small bit of play in the top plate on the viewfinder side. I searched the forums and, as suggested, tried to tighten the screw on the inside of the batter compartment. It was not loose. Is it likely that all top plates have a little movement?

Randall, there have been several posts on the topic.

Use the Forum's Search function to find Mark Norton's (marknorton) "Anatomy of the Leica M8." (Search on the word Anatomy, thread started by marknorton.)

He has also posted directly on the topic in the past few weeks.

The top plate should not be loose; there are two screws involved.

Thanks for the feedback. I have checked the one screw under the battery compartment. It was not loose. It is not a lot of play, just enough that I can see the flex and when compressing the camera. I can occasionally feel and hear a slight "give" when squeezing the body from top to bottom.

It'll get looser. No one has yet invented a screw that gets tighter when it vibrates. :)

Seriously, if mine were loose and I were handy, I'd tighten it. Not being handy, I'd send it to someone who knows the camera for tightening.

It's already loose enough that you're aware of it. Dust can get in, and any movement stresses the circuit connection between the top plate and the internal electronics.

If it's the viewfinder end which is loose, the fix is easy. Look inside the battery compartment, at the top are three screws. The one which needs tightening is the one closest to the end of the camera. Use as 75mm long P00 Phillips cross-head screwdriver; do not over-tighten, a sheared screw will seriously spoil your day.
