Hi Alex,

get rid of the rubber and it will wrap perfect around the wrist...

I have around 10 of the Leica standard straps, all with removed rubber.

I use them on all my cameras including DSLRs.

After I buy them new or used, I hand wash them in warm water with hair shampoo.

They are very soft and nice to the touch, release extremely quick for changing or drying and don't scratch up my cameras.

They are as unobtrusive, as it get's - anything lesser with a key ring attachment doesn't get near my cameras.

Recently, I scored two older Leica standard straps with the older prong attachment design.

These have the same strap width at the attachment, but a slightly wider measurement in the middle.

I will convert them to the newest quick release, to use with heavier camera/lens combos.

Standard Leica straps also make for great wrist strap conversions - see here: how to make your own Leica wrist strap

Menos, used your site to make the handstrap- fabulous.

But I have to ask- do you recommend any conditioner or a hot oil treatment ;)...it is a Leica strap after all....

Haha, Terry - thanks.

No special thing, just any standard shampoo will do, it is not a finicky material. It is well selected and German designed after all ;)

Seriously, when these straps come new, they are pretty stiff. The loud Leica flubby pad adds to the weirdness, why many people dismiss them.

I therefore prefer, buying used, which needs a wash anyway and comes already "preconditioned".

I have selected two favorite straps from my collection, which are very soft, but don't look "worn" and are always on my two bodies in my day bag.

hi, aesop, I just tried :-).

I took off small pieces from the middle of the pad with a sharp knife (cutter) until I reached the strap itself. From there it was easy to get rid of it. The pad it is only glued at the ends to the strap.

...will proceed with one of my spares, leppaludi - thanks for your input and apologies to the OP for veering slightly off-topic.
