Aperture 3.1.1 and Lens Information

Sorry if this has been asked before, but is it possible without creating a script / writing code to have Aperture display any lens information other than its focal length? In other words, can Aperture be made to display the make and model of a lens?

Thanks,

Rich

Thanks, Michael. No idea how to get from here to there, but if it's not insanely complicated, I will try it. Not sure where to start, however.

It's actually quite easy:

  1. Download and install EXIFtool
  2. Run the terminal command
  3. Select Update Metadata from Masters in Aperture

Let me know if you need more specific help.

Best regards,

Michael

Sorry Rich, no website...

What you need to do is (besides reading above links and sub-links)

  1. Install EXIFtool from ExifTool by Phil Harvey
  2. Have a good backup of your photo folder
  3. Open Terminal
  4. Type exiftool -overwrite_original_in_place -tagsfromfile @ '-xmp-aux:Lens<LensType' -tagsfromfile @ '-xmp-exif:ApertureValue<ApproximateFNumber' -P -ext .DNG -r and drag the folder with the photos onto Terminal, so that it can insert the path; then hit return
  5. Wait for completion...
  6. Close Terminal
  7. Open Aperture
  8. Select 'Update Metadata from Masters'

This will convert your existing Library.

For each new import, drag all photos into a folder on your drive and do steps 2-6 on this new folder to be imported; finally import it into Aperture.

Best,

Michael

hi all,

tried this and get a few errors, around 2-3% of the files,

example of the notification:

Error opening /Users/Pim/Desktop/Leica Originals/L1001219.DNG for writing

1 directories scanned

1553 image files updated

23 files weren't updated due to errors

Any views?

  • 4 weeks later...

Michael:

I tried the install tonight without success on my iMac.

Is there a mac / Aperture user who has been through this drill successfully?

Thanks,

Rich

Hi,

pimver, I would need some more input here; I've tried to contact you via PM but haven't heard back.

Rich, what exactly is the problem? - You may also wish to try this.

Best regards,

Michael

Michael - The Copy Leica Metadata - 1 seemed to work perfectly. Many thanks for it.

It launched and has been running for nine hours so far (I have appr. 100GB of files in my Aperture library). Off to work, but will update tonight.

Is this amount of time normal?

Best,

Rich

Doesn't sound unusual... - Feeding the folders directly into EXIFtools belly via Terminal is far more performant compared to pushing all files through Automator, but you're only doing it once. ;-)

Good luck and best regards,

Michael

Update - the program ran all day, but it didn't add any lens EXIF data (Aperture does display FL alone and guesses at maximum aperture), unless I'm missing something.

Did you do Metadata/Update from Masters in Aperture?

If yes, did you try the EXIFtool-script on a singe picture?

Best,

Michael

Dear Rich,

I'd suggest that you integrate the following into your workflow:

  1. Create Folder on your hard disk
  2. Copy photos form SD Card into that Folder
  3. Run the same Automator Script on that Folder only (not(!) on the entire Aperture Library again)
  4. Import contents of that Folder into Aperture

and you're done.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Michael

P.S.: If you work a bit with Automator, it is very easy to attach the very same script to said Folder so that the script runs on every file dropped into that Folder...
