Advertisement Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Hi Leica Blog, Take a look here Leica and Magnum signed collaboration . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pico Posted February 23, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 23, 2011 This is a landmark event! Magnum has been struggling some with the new digital paradigm, in particular digital video which has naturally evolved in photojournalism. Having Leica on the still-photo side of history will evince the history it has enabled. Wonderful, wonderful news!
menos I M6 Posted March 1, 2011 Share #3 Posted March 1, 2011 Actually I do not see this as a big thing. Magnum and Leica have a great history, which both can now build on marketing wise. Leica has an uprising popularity, which Magnum can benefit from, while Leica has a marketing benefit from boasting, that professional photojournalists do give input on their cameras. Not more or less professional photographers handle Leica cameras now and possibly not more or less technical input is received by Leica now. It is just, that there is an officially announced relationship established, which both enterprises can use for marketing. How is it difficult, to get feedback, that a snapshot mode on a digital M is unnecessary or that there is a benefit from a direct ISO selection method? IkarusJohn Posted March 7, 2011 Share #4 Posted March 7, 2011 I think this is too pessimistic. To date, product decisions have been made relatively opaquely - someone at Leica presumably considers product upgrades and new product lines. They may (but probably don't) look here to see what forum members (& trolls) have to say, but I doubt it. So to formalise an alliance which has gone back 60 years or so is actually reasonably significant; provided it is more than marketing as you suggest. What it implies is that the product development team at Leica will talk to and listen to Magnum photographers about what they need, and what works for them. Now, if handheld, high quality video really is something modern press photographers need, then what could be better than a camera which takes 35 mm HD video using M lenses (humour me) - at least, such a beast would be designed to meet the needs of photographers, rather than a perceived consumer need, or the electronics engineers ideas of what can be achieved, rather than what people want. Afterall, it is this sort of thinking that brought us the M8 & M9, focused on high quality photography rather than gimmickry. Cheers John
pico Posted March 8, 2011 Share #5 Posted March 8, 2011 Actually I do not see this as a big thing. Magnum and Leica have a great history, which both can now build on marketing wise. Leica has an uprising popularity, which Magnum can benefit from [... With respect, I disagree. Photojournalists today follow the trend of 'take the picture, Blue-Tooth it to the transmitter and it be done'. Leica has no such inclination. Leica had its day when it was the ground-breaking miniature camera, just as today the digital cameras have a similar advantage. All that Magnum and Leica can leverage is an appeal to the elegant simplicity of the old rangefinder. I do not know how Leica can keep its cameras' foot print and also have wireless transmission unless they take charge of and fix something like Eye-Fi which still requires another appliance to carry about.
