Just downloaded some B&W shot with the X1 at ISO 1600 and could not believe the sharp detail and beautiful tones straight out of the camera. I use Canon 5Dmkll everyday in my business ( Architectural Photography ) with "L' lens and havn't seen this kind of quality in a long time. This little camera is serious.

I was also taken aback at the IQ. I had read all sorts of reviews on the X1, the obvious downsides etc but everybody seemed to agree the IQ stood out. Even so I genuinely hadn't expected it to be quite so good.

This is one of my first efforts and I leave it to others to judge but I am quite content.

I'm with Jim, the OP. This is a really good camera - if you buy with your eyes open. I was in Broadway in Hong Kong today - they expect the X100 to be out in a month priced at about HK$10,000 ( so about US$1300 or GBP 790). I've no idea whether this is true or not but I'm sure there will be lots of scope for comparisons between the X1 (with firmware upgrade?) and the X100.

I do love X1 too.

I used to have D3 with 3 Nano lens and then later moved to 5DII with 4-5 "L" lens. Those cameras could produce a very sharp photos, but none of them inspired me to want to take a better photo.

Leica X1 does. It inspired me to try to take a better photos.

I bought a second hand X1 from a shop in Bangkok. This is the first time I try a digital leica. I didn't expect much because I read many reviews that said it's overpriced not worth US$2000, it has slowest auto focus, no real macro capability, it does not have any advance functions like modern camera today, etc.) After I try it, I returned it within 2 days. !!!

WHY?

Because I like this little camera a lot and can not use it as a second hand stuff. I returned it to exchange for a brand new one.

Love my X1 very much.

Jim, it is a pleasant change to read a positive report of the Leica X1 used by a 'Pro' as a complementary camera. I share your assessment completely. Thank you.

I know this feeling very well, not only in case of the X1, if i love a product i must have it new, it sounds strange but to have a used one with maybe some scratches it isnt the same feeling for me because i am a person who handles his productes extremely well and my stuff has never scratches and dents etc so to buy one with scratches would make me kind. But i buy this for myself not for the job so its not a "tool" for me, i undertsnd ppl who see it as a tool anyway

Cool thread thanks for posting! My friend has a 5D Mkii and I have an X1, we go out shooting and we've both been learning about each other's cameras (he just got the f/1.2 50mm which is gorgeous). They are two awesome tools and the pictures are great.

From the first day I used the X1 I sort of fell in love with it, the simplicity, the handling, the size and all in a nice small complete package, and this was even before I realized the IQ of the X1 was truly amazing even at 1600.

I'm a "one package" photographer, hate to lug bags of lenses and stuff around, mind you I have the stuff and the cameras to go with it, but simply can't be bothered to carry it around all day. I did use the M8 with the 35 lux, which I enjoyed using as well but the X1 caused my M8 to be "boxed and stored" I simply don't use it anymore (for different reasons)

As for AF speed, well I can't truly say that this has been an issue at all, its faster than my manually focussed M8 and when to slow it does produce a nice "ghostly" atmosphere which by now I have come to appreciate more than pixelsharp perfect images, it adds to the atmosphere of the image if you know how to utilize it, having said that in most situations the AF does do it's job, I don't do sports, fast moving cars, kids, dogs and ducks so its not a big thing for me, and surprisingly enough things I want to get sharp do get sharp....

The 35mm is my focal width, even back in film days I never much used anything else, I have learner to see with a 35mm vision over the years and the X1 lens is perhaps one of the best I've ever owned, I like it a lot.

I always have it on me using one of these "sniper-compact" straps, I have two batteries, a Voigtländer 35mm viewthingie, and use 8 4gb sandisk memory cards. I have owned the X1 for close to a year now and have taken 35.000 images or so of which more than 50% were absolute keepers, and roughly 6k were printables; various sizes bust most in the standard 13 x 18.

I wouldn't even consider at this point exchanging my X1 for any other camera system. I can think of the M9 but the manual focus is hard to operate for me personally due to an eye problem I have....

Anyway I love my X1 and also think it a very serious camera, no bells and whistles, no built in herb racks and other shat, straight forward, plain easy to use and excellent IQ ... what more would one want? (and please don't come up with faster AF, we all know about that...)

I for one would LIKE to have the herb rack as an option...and perhaps a little compartment to store my half chewed gum.

It's fun to read AF speed complaints and then be able to click into the complainers portfolio of still life and architectural images....I love the interweb!
