andalus Posted February 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm headed to Cairo on Tuesday for two weeks. Going to write a couple stories for the Providence RI (USA) newspapers on the revolution. Obviously, it's going to be an interesting trip. Taking my M9 and the 50 Lux ASPH and the 28 Summicron ASPH, plus a small ground level RRS tripod. Question is, do I need the 135 Telyt? What are the odds I'd use it. I suspect small, and I do want to go as light as possible. Do ya think the 28 and 50 are sufficient? Also, FWIW, I went to my insurance agent here in North Carolina and insured all my Leica gear. M( and three lenses and accessories. Tab came to about 215 bucks. Not bad. Turns out the camera stuff is not insured under homeowners policy. When I asked about the small Leica binoculars I've got, they said yes, they were insured under homeowners policy -- but not the camera and lenses. Odd, I thought. Anyway, anyone been to Cairo and what did you take. I'm obviously thinking about leaving the 135 at home. Thanks for any commentary.

mustafasoleiman Posted February 12, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 12, 2011 When was the last time you went to Cairo and when will be the next time? I'm headed to Cairo on Tuesday for two weeks. chris_tribble Posted February 12, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 12, 2011 For a trip like this I'd want something long (some people think that this would be the 50 ). I'd have a 90 or the 135 in a pocket if I were you.

mblaze Posted February 12, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 12, 2011 Now that Mubarak has officially stepped down the situation may have improved (or gotten worse), but at least as of a few days ago Cairo was definitely NOT a friendly place for conspicuous camera equipment. Anyone who'd insure your Leicas for $215 for such a trip is stark raving mad, unless they're assuming that if your cameras disappear you probably won't be around to file a claim either. (And good luck filing a police report there right now, too). wattsy Posted February 12, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 12, 2011 Anyone who'd insure your Leicas for $215 for such a trip is stark raving mad Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point but I'd assume that $215 is the insurance premium, not the amount of coverage. Right. $215 is an insanely low premium for an insurance policy that is very likely to be exercised, unless it contains an exclusion for precisely the kind of trip he is planning on taking. giordano Posted February 12, 2011 Share #9 Posted February 12, 2011 Maybe the insurance salesman thought you meant Cairo, Illinois.
pop Posted February 12, 2011 Share #10 Posted February 12, 2011 The fine print most likely excludes areas in times of civil unrest. Your claim might be refused on the grounds that anyone knew what was going on there.

acanalda Posted February 12, 2011 Share #12 Posted February 12, 2011 A long tryp to Cairo? Perhaps it would be a goog idea to get insured yourself not only your leica equipment. Best of luck Regads Arturo
edmond_terakopian Posted February 15, 2011 Share #13 Posted February 15, 2011 I would definitely take the 135mm and leave the tripod at home. As others have pointed out, do check out the insurance and make sure it would cover you for a working trip to a hostile environment. Good luck :-)
