It's amazing to me how even though we now have aspherical lenses from everything from the f/0.95 noctilux to the cheapest canon kit lens (18-55 has a psuedo), that the idea of good glass being key to a picture still exists, and that even the oldest lenses leica made are still very sharp even when compared to the contemporary. With all that being known, is there any difference between glass methods of the 40s and now that would result in better glass now than then, worse in either era, etc.?

(This is all new and interesting to me)

Erwin Puts is well known in Leica circles and he has a website replete with technical information.

In his section on "optics" you will find several essays which probably cover most of the things you have asked about. Skipping through the dense, technical stuff you will find the historical information useful.

Here is the link : DesignerGeneration

His "optics" tab is the lead into the other essays - the Cosina glass one is interesting. As is his review of the Voigtlander apo-lanthar 3.5/90mm which is to be found under the "Zeiss" tab :)
