ez9212 Posted February 3, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 3, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey guys. I know it's kind of a dump question but I really need some advices. I'm thinking about buying a used M8 on ebay and there are two that I'm considering. One is the original Leica M8, no dings or scratches, this one has about 2000 actuations. Another one that I see is an upgraded M8 with about 7000 actuations. They are about the same price so I'm having a hard time deciding which one I should get?:)Plz help. Jeff S Posted February 4, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 4, 2011 Personally I would only buy from a trusted dealer or photographer...but that's me. I have 2 M8.2s, one bought new, one used, both from good dealers at good prices. You didn't mention price, nor level of upgrades for the second camera (shutter, LCD screen and frame lines can be done separately or collectively). The M8.2 is better sorted and has all these upgrades plus a few other tweaks. Note that upgraded M8 shutters (and the M8.2) negate the 8000th speed, limiting it to 4000th. Some care, some don't. Prices vary accordingly, and can be well researched by web and phone to gauge the current market. You can check the buy/sell on the forum as well. To answer your question on actuations, both are relatively low and shouldn't be the determining factor IMO. Welcome to the forum. Jeff
CenkTamay Posted February 4, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 4, 2011 Less is good.
Jeff S Posted February 4, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 4, 2011 Less what? Fewer upgrades? Fewer actuations? Lower cost? Less knowledge about the source? Sometimes more is better, sometimes not. Jeff

Jeff S Posted February 5, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 5, 2011 As I said, not always good, depending on other factors (post #2). Jeff
Shootist Posted February 5, 2011 Share #7 Posted February 5, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Actuations Simple fact is the M8 shutter, and or the electronics that control it, can fail at any point in time. This has been proven. So just because the camera has less shutter actuation means nothing. You could say it hasn't been tested enough with low actuation to be deemed dependable. tbarker13 Posted February 5, 2011 Share #8 Posted February 5, 2011 Without a doubt, I would go with the M8.2. The difference between 2,000 actuations and 7,000 actuations is negligible. It's like trying to decide between two used cars - one with 2,000 miles and the other with 7,000 - and some cool upgrades. (If you said one had 20,000 and the other had 70,000, I'd have a different answer for you) I'd actually agree, though, on the idea of buying one that still has some warranty on it. I have no qualms about buying used. 95 percent of what I buy is used. But the M8s have had enough issues (two of my three have been back to the factory for warranty work) that I'd much rather have some sort of warranty.
