Learning Adobe Lightroom - How?

When I was learning it a few years ago I took a day off work, googled "Lightroom video tutorial" and looked for web sites that had a series of tutorials. It was free to do it this way.

If books are how you learn best Scott Kelby's is good.

If you decide to fuddle through on your own I highly recommend The Missing FAQ by Victoria Bampton. Actually, google her and see what you get. Maybe she has videos. She's amazing and her book is wonderful. I've learned many things from it and I've been using LR for several years.

Good luck.

Go to the Adobe website (Adobe) . click on "Learning"and you will find Adobe TV which has video tutorials on Lightroom . These are a sometimes basic but pretty useful . There is also a PDF manual which you can download and which is very comprehensive and also plenty of other learning materials . Just remember the Lightroom is part of the Photoshop family so it may be filed under Photoshop.

The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Book: The Complete Guide for Photographers: Amazon.co.uk: Martin Evening: Books

Also Lynda.com - Software training online-tutorials for Adobe, Microsoft, Apple & more - have some tutorials on Lightroom, though it's a subscription service. I can't remember, you may get the change of a free month's membership when you register Lightroom with Adobe.

The problem I have with Photoshop TV are the 'jokers' who appear in it. If you look at their podcasts in iTunes you can usually see from the description if there is any Lightroom content. If you have an Apple TV, the same podcasts are also available directly without having to go through iTunes.

I would highly recommend Chris Orwig's tutorials on Lynda.com.

I think there are 3 series, beginner , intermediate and somewhat advanced.

Excellent series. I have the Evening and Kelby books but I found these tutorials the most effective.

I learnt LR from Kelby's book - books I have to say because I bought LR 1 and 2 which are rather different. Books are useful to get a look at everything and are helpful to look things up. Especially when LR crashes and you have to redo your presets (happenend once).

I think Kelby's book is good for beginners, for the tricks etc you have to look somewhere else.

Aye, I am one big advocate for lynda - did most of the Lightroom and Photoshop for photogs tutorials, some of them twice to really understand them.

I'd say with 2 to 3 months time for training, one gets quite allright in the general use and principals. After that, a good book is great to look into stuff that you know is there, but you forgot about how to use properly.

How one learns best is individual. However I have found, having taught workshops in many areas of photography, including Lightroom, that most folks learn best with hands-on training. Find a good workshop to take in your area and supplement with the recommendations in these posts. In addition to Martin Evening I also like Coalson's books (see below.)

Here are some links that should be helpful for Lightroom and workflow:

Total Workflow from Inside Lightroom is compilation of tips and techniques related to workflow.

Adobe’s Lightroom Help and Support online. You can also access this directly from the Help menu within Lightroom

A little bit geeky but a great book about “DAM” (digital asset management) titled The DAM Book by Peter Krough

Good all around book and reference for Lightroom 3 titled Lightroom 3: Streamlining your digital photography process by Nathaniel Coalson

Lightroom tutorials from photoshopsupport.com

Lightroom forum where you can find answers or post your own topics

And don't forget about the Lightroom Shortcuts in the Help menu of LIghtroom itself!

Hope this helps :)

Cheers,

Joel

Learning enough to get started is one thing, ongoing help & support is also necessary. One of the best books on the subject is by Victoria Bampton, rather than being a tutorial it is a series of questions & answers in FAQ style. Despite using Lightroom since 2006, teaching it and being an Adobe Certified Expert on Lightroom - this book is always on my desk, can't recommend it highly enough. It's also available as an ebook for download.

It's available at: Victoria Bampton - Lightroom Queen

Also there is a great forum at Lightroom Forums where you can get help from a range of people (including Victoria, and myself) on anything Lightroom-related.

Finally there is also Adobe's own forum at Adobe Forums: Forum: Photoshop Lightroom

I have found the series of podcasts that I subscribe to on iTunes that are produced by "The Digital Photography Connection" to be quite useful in mastering some of the less obvious aspects of Lightroom. Michael Rather is the host/demonstrator on these free RSS podcasts, and does an excellent job of both showing on screen & telling the viewer what is being done. They also have DVDs along the line of Luminous Landscape's, but did I mention that the RSS podcasts are FREE! Home page for TDPCnctn: Photography | Photoshop | Lightroom | Video | Tutorials | Reviews. ;)
